So I was talking to my Gunnery Sergeant yesterday about my 5.56 AK and how Mags are really expensive. He asked if PMAGs could be converted to fit.
Well that got my gears turning and...

Tools used:
needle file set
dremel
plastic coat hanger (for trunnion latch and magazine latch)
3m super glue.

the PMAG follower even functions as a last round bolt hold open. pretty awesome.

I like this because even if you mess up all you lose is a pmag.

Have you shot with it yet?

Cool.  Probably not durable at all, but a good idea for some low cost range mags.  I wonder if there is a way to attach some metal lugs to it.  With small rivets or something that hopefully wouldn't get in the way of the follower.

Some plastic welding might make that hold up pretty well.

That's what I was thinking. I have a plastic welder and I just found a new project.

You might hold off a week or two and see what Magpul releases at the SHOT show.

Tapco makes Galil mags that work in most 5.56 AKs.  They cost just a little bit more than PMAGS, require no modification, have a life time warranty and are probably more durable than jerry rigging it.

Cool to see though.

This.  However converting Pmags for AK is a very cool option.

After action report:

The trunnion latch on both mags broke off . I attribute this to the coat hanger being made of what I assume is Nylon and I didn't account for the heat the trunnion builds up.
I think I am going to drill and epoxy a small bolt to that spot instead, and then shape it to fit the trunnion latch recess.

Ok so round 2.

I drilled a 3/16" hole on the front where the trunnion latch would go. I then cut and modified a 1/4" slotted bolt to the rough "shape" of a regular trunnion latch. I egged the hole out from .185" to just under .200 so it would be tight. Going very slowly I used the bolt to tap the hole I just drilled. Trimmed the bolt down to clear the follower and super glued in place.
Results: A MUCH STRONGER TRUNNION LATCH

Next I'm going to try and replace the magazine latch in the shape like this:

I will do my best to make it form fitting and then epoxy it to the backside of the magazine. I might even get fancy with it and J-B weld over the metal strip and sand it flush.

I like the direction your going in with this.  Heck, everything does better with JB Weld.  I'm staying tuned.  Thanks.

I just sent a letter to [email protected] in hopes that I can be put in contact with  "research and development" / marketing personnel.  I think this is a very good opportunity to capitalize on a niche in the firearms market that currently is only being supplied by imports or home conversions.

Round 3:

I've modded a small 10 round PMAG (ran out of 10/30s) with the carriage bolt as the trunnion latch and now used a cut piece of 1/16" sheet metal from some 50¢ L bracket I found at Home Depot.  If you line the top of the magazine latch up with the magazine catch detent on (any) PMAG, it'll fit perfectly.

Also, if you trim the threads of the "trunnion latch" just right, there is no need to remove any material from the follower.

Awesome job OP, I suggest you spread this out on different forums and publicize it as much as you can. Sooner or later Magpul might get in touch with you.

What type of epoxy are you using?

I'm actually surprised that Magpul doesn't make a modified Pmag for the 5.56 AK,  they would have the entire market cornered. Promags  are junk that nobody wants,  and Tapco mags don't fit the most popular Bulgarian rifles.

Thanks for the idea. I want a couple OD mags for my saiga223 for range use but OD circle tens are impossible to find and almost $100 when you do find one. I happen to have a bunch of OD pmags. Problem Solved.

Why would they? They know how to make an AK mag. Its only a matter of time.

Yeah, no kidding.

When they do start making other types of AK mags they are going to do a lot of their own research and designing that won't include looking at a hack-job that someone did in their shop, no offense OP.

Getting the info out there to show interest to Magpul is a good idea but there is no way they are going to get design ideas from it.
