Does anyone here have a 106cr? Will these take the tapco mags or the M85 steel mags?  Is there a 5.56 NATO ak out there that's better?

Yugo PAP that take AR mags.  Around $550 street price.

This is a pistol not rifle.

The mag adapters are plastic, fyi. I wanted one real bad till fondled one at a gun show. Probably not a big deal for a range toy, but I would prefer aluminum magwell from Definitive Arms or something for hard use.

I have a 106CR. I had the barrel chopped off at the block and had AK USA's extended 105 style comp permanently added. It's an awesome little compact carbine when folded. Very nice piece.

Is there a better 5.56 AK than the SLR106? No not really.
A well done Saiga .223 conversion is a good rifle. I've seen some customized, refinished SAR 3 rifles that were descent. But off the shelf, right now SLR106 is the 5.56 AK.

You want Bulgarian ((10)) or Polish Beryl (Black) mags for the SLR.  Anything else will be crap.

There are ton of SLR106 threads on here. Not much of anything bad can be said about the rifle. It looks and feels like an AK74 but with more common ammo.

No, M85 mags do not work in the 106.

I'm pretty sure you can file M85 mags to fit.

Are the newer 106's ok?  I keep hearing horror stories about these having problems?

Been covered by many other threads. By all reports nobody has had feeding issues with the SLR106 over the last several years.

I believe the M85 uses a Serbian RPK front trunnion while the SLR106 uses a standard Bulgarian AK74 front trunnion. The Saiga .223 uses a standard AKM front trunnion. Bulgarian ((10)) 5.56 mags can be filed to fit in the Saiga. The AKM front trunnion has thicker lugs than the AK74 front trunnion. The M85 front trunnion likely has even thicker lugs than the AKM. So mags designed for the M85, assuming they fit at all, would never fit tight in a SLR106, and the bullet angle would probably be all wrong. If you want a steel mag for the SLR106, the E. German Wieger is what to get.

M85 or M85 NP. Don't spend 50%-100% more for a gun that is not 50%-100% better.

my SLR106FR is probably my favorite AK right now also picked up a CR model but havent done anything with it yet..

whats not to like?

a high end quality built rifle

1/7 twist barrel

CL hammer forged barrel

a very usable sidefolding stock

a functional brake

a high quality designed for the rifle magazine

the feed issue has been resolved for 5-6+ years now, serial number prefix BD and later are good to go.

Maybe I'll find a company to convert the 106 to ar15 mags.
