For those that own a Saiga / SGL series of rifles, can someone tell me whether the back of the recoil spring guide, right above the button, is smooth or stepped?  I have a Bulgarian AK-74 and an SGL-31 and I got them confused at some point.  Can't tell which is which.  Will post pics soon.

The other question I have is: Is there a reason why the Russian AK-74M pattern (i.e., Saiga / SGL-31) recoil spring is about 3/4" longer than the older Bulgarian '74 pattern?

As you can see in the picture here, the Bulgarian one (on the top) is shorter.  Would using the longer spring in the Bulgy 74 reduce felt recoil?  Would it make any difference?

In the top pic, the Russian one is on the bottom. Not sure why the spring is shorter in the other pic.

Can someone who owns a Bulgy '74 or SGL/Saiga measure their recoil spring and report back?

Why? If you know that the Russian one is longer or shorter, than why worry about it?

I doubt your going to get any noticeable performance gain from either one.
