Just curious?

I have a similar thread in the suppressor subforum but I thought Id ask here to see if any AK addicts who dont frequent those threads might share some pics.

My plan is to get a VEPR in 7.62x39 that has the integrated sights and an extended barrel then cut the barrel down to 16.5" and thread in a more 'suppressor friendly' thread like 5/8x24.  Thoughts?

Yes, that's a nice set up. They were wise to run a can with a mid-length barrel AK with 314mm (12.4") barrel.
If ever pick up a 107CR, I may do the same thing. I'm kinda not feeling it for my 10" barrel M92.

HTA Kestrel 556 on my 5.45 AKs.

Details on checking cocentricity here

FWIW, I wouldn't buy a can for an AK. If you have one already laying around, it might be cool to fit it, but the performance just won't be there. The action is too noisy, and there is an awful lot of gas moving around.

Mechanically quieter on an AR-15, but the report seems the same to me.

It's definitely quieter for the shooter. I imagine that if you got 100' away, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I have an AAC Krink can in 7.62 that i use on both my krink calibers. the large 7.62 hole makes for a noisy 5.45 can but the blow back into the chamber is sure alot less. i would say its barely ear safe. when its on the 762 rifle, its much better. barely louder than an AR15 M4 with its shorty AAC SCAR can.

i should add that alignment is barely adequate but not baffle strikes....yet!!

What can is that and how did you mount it?

its an advanced armament corp Krinkov can but they only made a few way back when. it mounts to the krink muzzle threads just like the standard muzzle device would.

and i'd certainly agree with what mustangduckk said above, the AK is a messy system for a 762. it gets dirty fast. i also dont like shooting 545 russian surplus ammo thru it due to the corrosion.

Can't find any recent pictures, but I have a Gemtech HALO that I use on a Bulgarian sidefolder 74 build.  Vltor made an adapter called the HALO-74 that attaches to the 24mm threading and replaces the HALO's collar.  I've fit it on my SLR-106 rifle and pistol but unfired.  Works great on the 74 though.

I've cooked up an adapter that will let me put my AAC SDN-6 on a 24mm thread but I haven't tested it out yet.  I think it'll be fine on the 5.56/5.45 rifles, but I don't know that I'd trust the tolerance stacking for the 7.62 rifles.

There's a lot of folks that think unless you can achieve 100% optimal results, it isn't worth suppressing.  The AK leaks gas all around the dust cover and through the recoil spring rod opening.  You know what?  I don't care.  It's fun.  Maybe it isn't as quiet as some gucci-gear AR, but it is still a lot quieter than before!

Though to my ear, a 16" AR sounds pretty close to the 16" 74 barrel.  I've used it with an AUG as well, which is definitely a lot louder than both.

I have a Halo and an AK74.  The can cost more than the rifle, and is much harder to replace.  I just use it on ARs now.
