Nice rifle! Is it semi-auto, or single shot (gas system de-activated)?

Thanks fellas!

Sure wish I could find some Russian wood handguards for it.  Always wanted to see it with wood and a metal triangle folder.

OK, since I started this thread I guess it's time for an update.

I had originally planned to remove the AMD's barrel extension and use a YHM Phantom but it added way too much length. It really defeated the purpose of making an SBR. I decided to use just a plain muzzle nut/thread protector that I had in my parts box. It came with the UTG railed forend which is surprisingly very rigid. Using a full length VFG made mag changes difficult so I went with a stubby model. Then I mounted an old N-battery model EoTech and a Streamlight M3. I had one of my Trijicon Reflex optics mounted but I find them very limited. I don't like the way the reticle washes out when you're inside using a light, so I went with an EoTech I had laying around.

Everything mounted up front on the rails like it is makes it a little front heavy. I would prefer to mount an Aimpoint Micro in place of the EoTech, but I'm on a budget right now. Maybe someday.

Basically I wanted to have more options than what the stormwerkz hinge allowed for and didn't want to spend $500 on having a 5.5 folder installed.

For me, it is a range toy, so just wanted something comfy to shoot, can always go back to the Romanian sidefolder for AIMR look, but those suck to shoot.

Wow, glad to see someone revived this old thread. Since I started it I figured I should post an update.

Here's my AMD-65 now. Still using the UTG railed forend that came with it when I bought it and I replaced the original trigger with a Red Star Arms adjustable unit. I was using an Aimpoint PRO for a while but had to scrounge it for another project, so I'm back to one of my several Trijicon Reflex optics I had sitting in the parts box.

I also formed a length of 3/8" solid round stock to make a cheek riser and welded that in place. For a uniform finish on the folder I used a sponge and dabbed on some Rustoleum truck bed liner for a textured finish.

I ditched the stock grip that came on it and replaced it with a rubber Hogue grip. The AMD uses a horrible folder design which has a sharp screw head sticking down from the bottom of the receiver right where your thumb meets your hand. Cutting a Hogue out recesses the screw and protects your hand.

I have a stubby vertical foregrip on there wrapped with a piece of bicycle inner tube. Using a full length vert grip makes mag changes difficult.

Then came a sling attachment. I welded a quick disconnect receiver to the left side of the receiver which allows me to use either a single point sling or a 2-point with a front attachment on the rail.

Last is the safety. I TIG welded a plate on the bottom of the safety to allow for manipulation without losing your firing grip. Then I cut out a groove to act as a bolt hold open. I know I could have bought a safety which does the same thing, but why buy when I can make it myself?

After all the cutting and welding the finish is a little trashed. At this point I'm not really concerned with the looks since, well let's face it, it's an AK. If it starts to look too beat up I'll break out the cans of Rustoleum camo paint and have at it!
