I thought I heard there was some type of timing issue that made it so that you could only use a 4 piece Bulgarian device. Is that true or will any device with that thread pattern work?

The problem isnt timing, it is the length and diameter of the spare barrel sitcking out in front of the threads.

The FSB of the Bulgarian and Russian rifles are a bit different on the muzzle device timing. The retainer pin location are different. A 24mm muzzle device would work fine on both, like the manticore night brake. However, putting a Russian krink booster on a Bulgarian muzzle will off set the device.

Would cutting a new notch in the booster solve this?

I debated about this topic as well, because I'm awaiting the arrival of my tax stamp so that I can SBR my SLR-107CR. I spent a lot of time talking with a guy who has already SBR'ed his, and he has a Russian cone style brake on his. He swears that it has caused him no issues whatsoever, and that it goes on just fine. So... That's what I have purchased for mine. I am hoping that it will work okay without any problems. Worst case scenario, I will buy something else. For now though... I'm confident that what I have bought will work.

There was an old thread in which TX-Zen, Nictra, and others have discussed the indexing issue. If I remember the conclusion of that discussion correctly, Russian AK-104/105 boosters work fine on the Bulgarian SLR-106CR/107CR FSB. It is not perfect positioning, but works nevertheless. Maybe TX-Zen and Nictra can chime in.

ETA: Here's the link to that old thread.

They will work either way but the cut outs on the tip of the cone won't be at 3 and 9 o'clock if you cross the manufacture.

So it's really only a cosmetic/correctness thing.

takes 5 secondrs to cut a new notch for the offset plunger. Not a big deal.

The Bulgarian flash hider has a wider flute at the 6 o'clock position.

One could argue that having it rotated 15 degrees to index off the CR plunger is an improvement - like the slant brake it counteracts the right hand rotation of the bolt.
