Just went to the local gun store and they had spam cans of 7.62x39  for $105. How many rds are in these cans, to make it that much cheaper than 7n6? I tried reading the can but all I could make out was 7.62 lol.

Spam cans of 762 generally have 750 rounds in them compared to
7n6 which contain 1080. Still a good buy though.

Could be I should have asked, but it was busy and I didnt feel like waiting. It looked just like the 7n6 tin and I got excited then saw it was 7.62. Kinda wish I got the sgl-21 instead of the 31 seems like every where has 7.62 but no 5.45. Only found one store that stocks silver bear 5.45

In my experience, spam cans loaded with commercial (non-surplus) ammo are not standardized in terms of quantity.  I have 600, 640, and 700 round 7.62x39 spam cans.  All new production, non-corrosive.

Undoubtedly it is 440 rounds of 7.62 x 54R, not 7.62x39.

Pretty sure it was Mil-surplus. Like I said it looked just like the 7n6 can, and the writing on it was in Russian. These are all the same 740 rds correct?

Yeah probably right, Ill go back sometime this week and verify. Just thought that would be a great deal for 7.62x39 because I couldnt even find it on the internet to compare prices.

The cans will tell you alot about it's contents. A typical Russian 7.62x54R, 70's era can looks like this........

But, it's NOT all the same though (and I'm not saying that they are all Russian)...........

A better look at the 7.62x39 can and the 5.45x39 can from the above photo.

So......about the original question.

A:  The total count of the ammo will depend on the inner packing method that was used.  Sometimes just paper was used to wrap the ammo and sometimes the ammo was placed w/in cardboard boxes within the spam can.

At the price you paid I'd suspect that you have 7.62x54R.

Aloha, Mark

PS......more info (the can in the video is Bulgarian).........

yes very good info, looks like its the 7.62x54. I didnt actually buy it. I was looking for 5.45. Just thought it would be a low price for 7.62x39 for anyone in the area to consider. Pretty confusing how they dont put x39 or x54 on the box

$105 for a spam can of 54R isn't exactly a great deal. Picked up some semi-rusted cans from Copes for $65 each and $10 flat shipping. Normal cans can be found in the $75-$80 range.

I believe your right, the 750rd (740?) spam can of 762x39 I have is brown bear or golden bear or whatever that manufacturer is (lacquer coated fmj). It's not milsurp but from the outside it looks it.
