If I have to carry a lot of weight - and don't need to run - I still prefer the old ALICE gear. But for a chest rig, I got an Eagle AK-47 chest rig from optactical.com and am very happy with it.

The buckles are green. The quality is good. It's not too pricey. And, it's more versatile (has a lot more MOLLE loops) than the more expensive chest rig from Specter.

HERE IS WHAT IAM USEING FOR MY AK SUPPORT GEAR
Ive been testing and training with this gear for over a month now'
Ive done mag changes and pistol transition, moveing in different positions
its working great!!!

In the front flap--there is a compass 3 maps and a protractor.

under the front flap, there is a set of mini-binoculars ink-pen and pencil:
flash light and first-aid kit.
in the zipper pouch there is food for the day.

Last with the flap down in the rear part of the bag there is a mag pouch that holds 3 30 rd. AK47 mags and there is enough room to use it as a dump pouch

My idea isnt as attractive as alot of the chest rigs out there but, Im a suspenders and pouches kind of guy.

Ive found the British 1958 pattern web gear will easily hold 3 AK 74/47 mags per pouch, they will hold 4-5 AR15 mags each, and 3 mags for a .308 rifle easily fit as well.  For me that is the most cost effective option considering the interchangability factor.  And a set of gear costs about 20 dollars, with varying load options that a belt and suspenders provide.

Sorry no pictures.

I use the same bag.  Low profile, secure, rugged, and holds a decent amount of mags.  Easy to throw around in the car/house/range, has belt loops to secure to a belt, can be used as a manbag, or use both as I do.  It distributes the weight nicely.  I also have a similar looking Chinese pouch for my Chinese drum mag.

As it sits now.

The AR shingle can be a tight fit, you might consider this:

I think it looks like my Blackhawk rig.

It fits 12x 30-round mags for my AK-74 and is very comfortable (even with a slightly modified center-of-gravity thanks to all that 5.45 ammo).  It has two side pouches for miscellaneous gear plus a center pocket commonly used for maps and the like.  The straps are padded and have quick-release buckles.  The materials and workmanship are first-rate.

I don't think Blackhawk makes it in Woodland anymore, though.

For an AK noob like myself, how is your gear modified from OEM configuration?

Here is a link to the top rig.

I removed the four grenade pouches(two on each side of the mag pouches), lowered the top of the magazine pouches to gain better access to the mags, added velcro to the front of the mag pouches, replaced the magazine pouch flaps with some from an old Black Hawk rifle vest, replaced the shoulder straps with wider ones to better distribute the weight making it much more comfortable to wear and added a side release buckle to the waist strap(original design requires you to tie the straps behind you back like an apron).

Here is a link to the center rig I have pictured.

I replaced the original shoulder straps with wider ones that better distribute the weight and I also added a side release buckle to the waist strap. (the guy in the link is wearing it incorrectly, the straps should cross behind the back and not in the front.)

Here is a link to the bottom rig i have pictured.

I removed the flap closures from all but the outer most pouches, removed the wooden toggles, right most pouch I added velcro closure, added elastic across all but the outer most pouches to retain the magazines, added velcro and pistol strap closure to the pouch second from the right(right side as you would be wearing it that is)and added a side release buckle to the waist strap.

Still have a few mods I want to make to each of the rigs I have pictured. Hope this answers your question.

sureshot,

That's some very nice work. With respect to the Centerfire Systems rig, the retailer says the pouches can hold one AK mag each. Your photo shows it holding two. Did you need to modify the pouches in any way to increase the volume?

You might be amused by something I saw in an awful post-apocalyptic movie titled 20 Years Later. One of the characters used a Chicom SKS chest rig to hold rounds for his bolt action sporter. The funny part...he wore it like a back pack, with the pouches squarely between his shoulder blades. Kinda makes the Centerfire model look like an SF operator.

Thats funny.

I didn't have to mod the pouches to hold two mags per but the flap closures are a pain to close with two mags in them. It is a snug fit and since the pouch is made so tall, it can be slow to remove the mags. Also, when the rig was loaded with six mags the original skinny shoulder straps were very uncomfortable.

It is a good base rig if you don't mind making or paying for the mods. I'll be lowering the tops of the mag pouches and replacing the flaps as I did with the top most rig. I also intend to remove the four smaller pouches and either put MOLLE webbing there or make a med pouch on the right side and three pistol mag pouches on the left.

Does Spec Ops still make their AK Chest Rig anymore?  I just looked on their site and I didn't see it!  I have one that I run (although not much, I've neglected my AKs over the last few years for my ARs and SIG, but I'm heading back towards the AK goodness) and it's a FANTASTIC rig.  Holds eight magazines flat against the chest, two per slot.  It also has a radio pouch (which I am going to mod out to something somewhat useful for me).  Sorry I can't put up a pic at the moment, my AK gear is several hundred miles away from me at the moment.

Here's an old link I found:

This works great... with my AK's.  Mid-80's Soviet Afghanistan Conflict issue.  Seems to work just fine and comfortable too.  Unfortunately, I bought it from a guy in the UK so I paid a lot more than I should have but I wanted it, same as all the other crap I own.

But its nice to know that I can pick up an AK74, G3, or M1A and be able to use the same rig without modification.
