I'm looking to get some web gear for my AK.  What is everybody using for their kit?

The three pocket surplus chest rigs are inexpensive, but I'd like something that held a little bit more ammo and gear.

And I don't want to spend hundreds of bucks either.

Any recommendations?

I just use a MOLLE vest available at most tactical accessory dealers. I get the AR15 pouches knowing that it will only hold half as many AK mags. If it's a 2 mag AR15 you can bet it will only hold 1 AK mag. Then I add a bunch of smaller miscellaneous pouches for Letherman tools, first aid, flashlights, etc.

I use a STRIKE 4 Molle vest with a universal 3 cell pouch of wich I have 2 one left one right you can carry 3AR,3AK or 2 M14 mags in each pouch so 12 for M14 and 18 for AK and AR.The system distributes the weight so well its very comfortable to carry.I use a hydrastorm 100 0z..the system is so much better than the older ALICE stuff and ALICE inspired stuff.

I have my older 3 mag M16 type pouches I use to use for the AK now its just handout gear. The new molle is real nice stuff also its beltless all QD buckles and removable padded vest panels. You carry the gear so nothing hangs past the waistline..total freedom of movement and way better weight distribution. If you use a brace of weapons like me..I have an AR carbine, side folding AK,M14 type and mag pouches for my 1911 and 12 gauge ammo.

So 1 system for any combination of the longarms along with the shotgun and pistol although the M14 type is not compact so with that its just rifle and side arm even with a pistol gripped 590.

I'm using a Tactical Tailor MAV with HSGI universal rifle mag pouches. The mag pouches hold 2 AK mags (5.56, haven't tried other cals) or 3 AR mags. The elastic ensures that the mags aren't floppy in the mag pouch.

I'm really liking MOLLE as it's just so damm flexible. You can do anything with it without having to rebuy web gear all the time. BSW

I'm using Tactical tailor mag pouches on an Interceptor.

I do have a Russian Pioneer chest apron for sale. Holds 12 AK-74/47 mags, armor plate, medical kit, bayonet, grenades, etc...
Olive drab.

PM if interested.

How do you like this one...tell me about it.  How many AK (7.62X39) mags can you fit in the mag pouches and do the fit well.

Thanks

It's hard to find good, modern web gear that fits the AK platform.

The actual Russian vests work perfectly, but are a bit outdated and pretty bulky and unrefined by modern (re: molle ) standards.

HSGI's universal pouches Hold 2 Ak or 3 Ar mags, as mentioned, and come in a variety of colors/patterns.

I see Blackahwk has a new AK-specific pouch out.

Tactical Tailor'supdated model seems alright. I had an older version of their pouch that didn't work worth a damn due to the curvature of the mags.

Some may scoff at this last option, but those generic open-top shingles intended for AR magazines just barely fit 5.45mm AK74 mags. Note these are the replicas. Don't expect something like a Tactical Tailor shingle to work; it'll be too tight.

How much do you want to spend?

You'd think there'd be a market for open top AK-specific pouches, but alas, I haven't seen any offered for sale.
The AK is a redheaded stepchild for the gear-makers. They all seem to ignore it. I would assume contractors in Iraq would love some non-1940's era magazine carriers for the AK.

it is built like a tank and carries everything nicely above the waist. they used to have open top mag pouches but i don't see 'em now.

i have a TT mav 2pc. 2 TT ak pouches, 2 HSGI universal mag pouches. total load out of 8 30rd mags. it's a heavy bitch, but lot's of firepower.
i personally like the new TT pouches better than the HSGI ones. Both have their adavantages over the other , but the HSGI ones just seem a bit too tight and the closure flap a bit too short.

If you can't find a chest rig you like, consider the Chinese Man Purse that CTD sells.

The universla pouches I have are Black Hawk copied strike 4 universal pouches sold by sportsmans guide at $15 a piece instead of Black Hawks price of $46 each.Ive been through a few carbine classes with this rig and the pouches are tough. My buddy has the Black Hawk brand and you cant tell the difference even the stitching is the same. But back to the pouch makes 18 AK mags fell like 10 with other gear.

+1 or the chinese chest rigs, they work very well and are a cheaper alternative to most.

If you really want a nice rig you'll have to buy an American made rig.

Probably old school but use the Load Bearing Equipment (LBE) the army used to use, with AK mag. pouches instead of AR mag. pouches.

This is suppose to be army issue stuff.

I ordered LBE from this guy with AR stuff and quality was excellent and prices are very good.

Scroll down for the US COMBAT HARNESS SET area for the LBE items, would also recommend the quart canteen and cover. Under holster section is are one for it holster for the LBE; LBE

Here are the AK pouches for the LBE; AK pouches

This guy doesn't show the AK LBE stuff but all his LBE stuff is made in the USA and the quality is good; USA made pouches

They are very tough and don't forget the mag. pouches for the pistol. Wouldn't recommend the .45 pouches because the only hold 2 mags. other companies make doubles ones that 4-6 mags. for the .45

I don't know if anyone is really interested, but I make some MOLLE web gear and I make a triple mag pouch specifically for the Ak47 30 round mag.  It is taller than a typical AR Mag pouch and has a longer flap to accomodate the unique shape if the AK Magazine.

Here's a vest I built for a gentleman specifically for his AK47.  It is based on the M83 South African Vest.

Here's a closeup of the Double AK Pouch:

I prefer the E&E rifle bog out bag.  I have the dark blue one so that I can sling it over my shoulder with a pistol, water and several mags and not even get a second look.

all the chest rigs are way cool, but in reality, when would you EVER wear it out in public?  If a hurricane hit my island and I needed to make a quick run to get more baby food and diapers, I would stick out like a sore thumb wearing a chest rig...

Here is it in action with myslef and buddy of mine during an AK combatives class.  We put our AK's in a folding chair bag, I stuck an upbrell out the end for more camoflage and we could've walked into the local McD's for lunch and not gotten a second glance from anyone.

I'm starting to get my web gear set up now after a trip to the local surplus store, a purchase on eBay and a clearance sale from Diamondback Tactical and High Speed Gear Inc.

Here's what I got.

SDS Utility Molle Belt
Low profile suspenders from DBT
Alice buttpack on the rear
2 SDS Utility/Canteen molle pouches on the right side
2 Univeral Rifle Mag pouches from HSGI on the left side (these were on clearance from HSGI as they were getting rid of their Woodland Camo stuff) and they'll hold 4 AK mags

I've got on the surplus Beretta holsters on order and I'm going to put it on the right side somewhere.

I still need to get a med pouch set up.  I'll probably put it on the right side directly in front.

The ground! But seriously, under stress, you'll do what you practice. If that doesn't work for you, get a maxpedition roly poly or similar.

My AK chest rig from centerfire just showed up.  It's really good quality, especially for the price.  I just need to get something to secure the back without having to tie it.  I might also take the shoulder pads off of my LBV and put it on this.  It fits 3 AK mags in the front pouches and 2 hi cap pistol mags in each of the small pouches next to the AK mag pouches.  Not bad at all for $5.99.

I just got one of the centerfire 5.99 chestrigs as well. They seem to be a copy of the chinease type. I am pretty happy with it, mine was 12.39 shipped with a CC order. My only complaint is the straps in the back to tie it are too short, luckily I am pretty slim. I will most likely replace them with some sort of buckle. For under 15 dollars you cant go wrong, and I like the velcro better than the chinease type anyway.
