I see it was designed for 1-5x scopes. Anyone know if the MI 30 mm side mount (MI-AK30SM, LINK) will play nice with any of the more popular budget 1-6x scopes like the PA 1-6x or the Vortex Strike Eagle?

Specifically, will there be clearance for the zoom adjustment knob? If the answer is a hard no, what scope would you recommend? Plan to mount on a 5.45 rifle.

how exactly does a 1-6x fit differently than a 1-5x?

i'm not sure what your thought process is here.

Yes. Yes it does.

My thought process is that the variation in commie guns combined with different diameter knobs on different scopes can sometimes lead to the zoom knob being un-usable because it doesn't clear the dust cover.

It can happen

Then say "different diameter knobs".  Alluding that magnification range has something to do with the OD of a machined piece that is completely independent of the magnification range (leupold 2.5-8x36, 3.5-10, and 4.5-14 mark 4's all use the same adjustment ring) doesn't lend credence.

That said, of course different diameters can interfere.  One would think if that were an issue, upon informing the manufacturer, they'd offer refund/replacement with a different mount.  If they don't, EE?

I think the biggest problem you'll find will be the eye relief. The MI mount doesn't play that well with longer scopes -- You may find your wanting in the LOP department.
