THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Bought an Ultimac out of a pawnshop today. It is the model that has the "vents" at the front of it. I tried it on a Sar 1 that I have and it was quite a bit too short to work. Their website is not exactly helpful in that it says "For Ak's with vented gas tubes".....ok....It was really cheap, $25 and looks new so I couldn't pass it up but I'm not sure what I might use it on. If nothing else I figure I might cut it down to fit my planned Draco SBR.

It should pretty much fit anything so far as I know, though I think the vented ones were made specifically for AK's that came with vented tubes (Chinese I think).

how short is short? Ultimak gas tubes a designed to be shorter than the standard gas tube. Put it on your SAR center it and tighten down the barrel bands. The gas ports are a non issue, your Romanian will function fine.

I'd say almost 1/4" short. I know they are not supposed to be a tight fit- they really can't be as there are so many variations in rifles but this just seemed to be more than I had expected and it's more than the one that I have mounted on another rifle- that one is the "solid" style......

1/4" "too short" is the correct length. It gives the barrel room to expand and contract without pushing the mount against the gas block or the front of the receiver. If you have one in there tight, it's the wrong model.

Ideally the Ultimak shouldn't be touching either the gas block or the rear sight block when installed.

This one does not engage the tube catch at all, my other one does....It just seemed like a much larger gap. I suppose bolted down it can't hurt anything....

It shouldn't engage the tube catch. You should split the difference, so the gap in front and back are the same.
