I like classic Ak's, but say go for all the modern AR stuff as well. It adds possibilities to the AK system.

Still at it. Working on figuring out small details at the moment. Clamps and stuff like that. Should have pics to show maybe Tues or Wed.

Does anyone know if there is a thread or other source of information that will give me dimensions on the most popular red dot sights? What I'm after is the distance from the center of the optic's glass to the top surface of the rail when it's mounted.

this isn't exactly what you are looking for but maybe a starting point. measurements based off the mounting of a modified bp-02 mount, the stock aimpoint comp m2 ring, and a discontinued springfield aimpoint ring. The bp-02 in modified version as pictured is <almost> as low as your rail is when it comes to the dust cover. your rail will be a tad shorter, as it appears to almost rest on the dust cover, while the bp-02 is slightly raised off of it.

it should be noted that many of us are aware that it is almost impossible to get a true co-witness without going with either the aimpoint micro on an ultimak (and probably your dlr), or the la-rue irondot. IMO it's not that big of a deal.

Today I started an initial production run of just ten of the DogLeg optic rails. It has taken a bit of head scratching to get the rear quick release mechanism to adapt to the varience from one rifle to another.

At the rear the quick release has a base block that attaches with the buttstock screw. Within that mechanism there is vertical adjustability of about 1/4 inch. Where the rear quick release block attaches to the picatinney rail there is about 3/8 inch total length adjustment. My test rifle is of Romanian origin but, I think the amount of adjustment should accomodate most types. I have not yet tried the Saiga. I'll get to that one as soon as I can to test for fit. Maybe in the next couple of weeks.

The DogLeg is made of 7075-T6 aluminum sourced from Alcoa of USA origin. We CNC machine all the custom parts in our shop in Austin, Texas. The product will be available in a black anodized finish for now. I'll look at offering desert tan and OD in the future. The cross pin that fits into the sight block in place of the original rear leaf is made of 304 stainless steel also made by us of USA sourced material.

I will post pictures of the parts by Tuesday before they go out for anodize. I should have them back and ready to ship by Friday if all goes well. Two of them are already spoken for so I'll have eight available.

Price for the DogLeg rail is $99 bucks even. Somehow a hundred just felt like too much. On these first ten I'll throw in a free basic rear peep sight just like the one in the pictures in this thread.

Thanks to everyone for all your helpful input.

Is it possible for you to post some more pictures of this rail mounted? Maybe include a side profile shot?

In my post above I indicated this first batch of ten will each get a basic rear peep thrown in for free. Regular price for the basic peep will be $25 bucks.

In the coming weeks I plan on developing some folding and adjustable sights for the AK platform that will be quite a bit more complex and therefore expensive. They will come on the heels of the Flat Top system.

The upside is the peep being so close to your eye makes a huge improvement in aiming ease and comfort. I'm fairly certain it will be a big improvement over the standard leaf when I get out to the range in the next day or two. The sight radius has more than doubled on the rifle.

Make some tip off rings for it. You know so you can swing the red dot off to the left side if it goes down.

that's not a required feature of the rail. but more of one in the mounting RINGS for the red dot. either go with a flip style ring, twist off ring, or a quick disconnect

Thanks for all the help. I have to try registering at theakforum as they never responded to my original registration. I'll do that today.

Yes, something like that. I was looking for something to buy for myself and didn't find anything I was satisfied with. Nothing I found was quite what I was after regarding the balance of features and price so I decided to do my own. As I worked on the project it took two different paths depending on what you like best. Take a look at my FlatTop rail thread for the other option I'm working on.

Thanks

I am following that one also, both your threads are subscribed to, now please go back to work on the rail systems and stop wasting time here
