They aren't "better" than the metal/polymer milsurp mags. From a functional standpoint, they are all pretty much equal. The bakelites just became popular recently for some reason, probably due to aesthetics.
Not long ago, when 5.45x45 ammo and rifles were relatively scarce, dealers couldn't give away those bakelite mags. You could buy them at gunshows all day long for $5 or less. Now they bring $30+ each. Go figure... |

technically, they are not "Bakelite" which is a trade name..but "phenolic resin" doesn't sound as good
eta. most are not true Bakelite... |

Russian bakelite mags fetch a premium because they are a little more scarce and look downright sexy. I still cant figure out why East German bakelites fetch a premium since they are some of the most common AK 74 mags in the country.
