What 7.62? 7.62x54r 7.62x39

Probably 7.62x39mm since he mentioned it was an AK. Most anything will work fine usually. But I use the Hornady zombie max ammo, good stuff. Has the plastic ballistic tip. I would say any soft point ammo would work good also.

The o.p. mentioned vepr. They come in 7.62x39, 7.62x51 7.62x54r, and 7.62x63.

I've tested Tula 154gr SP, Hornady 123gr Amax, Federal Fusion 123gr SP, and Remington 123gr SP.

Tula 154gr is far superior on pigs. All work good on deer, Tula 154gr still being my favorite

Tula 154 grain SP, Federal Fusion, Hornady SST, and a few others. Most are rather expensive and domestic except the Tula.
The X39 isn't an optimal hunting round. It will do the job inside 100 yards, but still there are much better options.

Tula 154 gr soft points are what I use and they work well. And very reasonable cost compared to any US offerings, which work great as well as they are specifically made for hunting.

I hunt deer in Wisconsin with my Arsenal . Most of my shots are 100 yards or less in the hard woods . Occasionally you have 100 to 300 yard shots . I use Golden Bear ammo 125 GR. soft point. I used the 154 GR. soft point and 123 GR. hollow point. The lighter bullets have a greater accuracy over 100 yards. I use a Eotec XPS2-2 with great success .A far a knock down power . Most of the time 1 shot 1 kill.

The Tula 154 grain SP ammo was designed for hunting. And it's much, much cheaper...

My local Cabela's has carried SP x39 from both Herter's (which is Sellier&Bellot, IIRC) and PPU (Prvi).  One of them was 154 grain IIRC and the other was 124 grain or thereabouts.  I bought some of both but would probably use the lighter round to keep it flatter shooting and closer to the POI of the ball ammo I am sighted in for.

Hornady SST loads should be good to go in most states too.

Barnes offers the TSX in .310 if you reload.

Or you can pay nearly 2 bucks a pop for it...

Federal makes two hunting rounds for the 7.62 X 39mm.  One is their American Eagle, soft point bullets.  Another is their upper scale "Fusion" ammo, featuring their Fusion hunting bullet.

I'm new to SKS, but checking youtubes the hunters say to use 154 gr soft point.
SG ammo seems to sell it here.
http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/rifle-ammo-sale/762x39-ammo
Tulo brand.

But others above have had experience hunting with this caliber, I don't.

Yes I have for deer hunting. Works well, goes bang and deer drop or don't go far. They expand just like the good American ammo. So cheap just try it and if you like it stock up.

Keep in mind that there's a fair chance that the youtubers are just pushing an opinion based on a preconceived bias in favor of heavier bullets. Unless you run across someone who has actually done some testing, take those preferences with a grain of salt.

The 30-30 has taken countless deer and the x39 comes in pretty close in terms of performance. So there's a wide margin of error involved.

You run into the same bias when people try and argue that the .243 is sub-optimal for deer when the new hunters I take out drop deer with boring regularity with the .223 from an AR.

When it comes to white tails within 250 yards, the "optimum" gun choice probably depends more on the comfort/familiarity of the shooter with the rifle than it does the actual choice of caliber. You'll drop more deer based on your ability to properly place the shot than will it depend on energy or "knockdown power" or trying to micromanage or obsess over bullet weight options.

My son shot an 8 pt buck @ 08:30 this morning with a  Saiga 7,62x39 using  Hornady 123g SST.

Shot through front of the chest.  It ran about 50 yards before collapsing.

Worked great in heavy cover (swamp) with an Aimpoint Pro.

There's an interesting option for defense and hunting; the PRVI (PPU) 7.62x39 'round-nose soft point'. Looks like a soft-point pistol bullet in a rifle case and is still 123 gr. The round nose will eat up velocity but is better for energy transfer at closer ranges, like out to 100. I have these in a magazine for my AMD65 for my 'late night visitors'. I have tested it in the FEG and it runs fine with the same POI at 50 yds. Brass case, copper jacket, no steel, non-corrosive.
