this has been discuused before and I would like to bring it up again

Im thinking of using a 5.45x39mm (.221) barrel for a .22 LR project

what are your thoughts and what do you think about this type of use, remember 22lr is a lead projectile

have you read anywhere where some one had a problem trying this

What is the twist rate of the barrel ?

Also what is the reason for this when there are so many purpose built .22  LR barrels out there ?

the purpose is to use a old 5.45mm barrel

I m a extremely well versed builder  not some idiot who slapped pre made part together, Im working up a special project, I know i can buy 22 cal barrels I know about the difference in 223/556 and 5.45 ( 221)

so back on topic  has anyone had success using 22lr with lead projectiles in a 5.45 x39mm rifled barrel

Fires just fine from a modified Ciener 22 conversion in my S&W M&P-15 5.45 upper.  Accuracy is meh - but fine for plinking.

If the OP was extremely well versed he would know the twist rate will not lead to good accuracy and the barrel will have terrible lead fouling.  But I guess he just want's to see if the rest of us know that.

Most 5.45 barrels run a twist rate of around 1:8. The bore's run pretty tight, .214 or so with the groove about .221 as noted. A lot of the com-bloc barrels I've seen are pretty rough and I would think they would lead up pretty quickly. It might be a good basis for a barrel project centered on the 60 grain subsonic Aquila ammo if the bore seems smooth. Most 10-22 barrels for that ammo are 1:9.

How did you modify the Ciener conversion?

Surprisingly I get great accuracy on that ammo out of the cheap Romanian bolt actions.  I have 5 of the rifles and all shoot that ammo very well. Odd to say the least.

How did you modify the Ciener conversion?

Reprofiled the chamber adapter to fit a 5.45 chamber.
