I bought my first AK-74 in early 2010, one of those "truck guns" (Bulgarian) sold by J&G Sales. I think I paid $329 for it.
After I scraped off the latex house paint on the furniture I found a pretty nice stock set underneath with just one really
small blemish. It's been a very good rifle, numbers match, functions well, eats anything and is pretty accurate.

When I stated looking at ammo for it I found 7n6 for $239.99 per crate plus shipping. 11.1 ¢ per round. I bought some
and put it away for SHTF or for use in case commercial went way up in price or became unavailable during a panic.
Since then I've ended up putting mostly Silver Bear and Golden Tiger through it.

So, my question is this. I've read 7n6 began coming into the USA around 2005 or so. I thought in 2010 that $239.99 per
crate was a screaming deal. With all of the crazieness surrounding the round in the last week, and with it now going for
20¢ or more per round, I was wondering what it was selling for back in 2005. Does anyone remember?

Thanks!

What craziness? I just bought 1,000 rounds for $200. I don't remember seeing it for less than that the last 4 years

What craziness? I was referring to the BATFE decision to no longer allow it to be imported.

So, you got 1,000 rounds for $200? Yeah, that's 20¢ per round or $432 per crate. In the weeks/months/years to come that might not be such
a bad deal, but SGAmmo had it for 16.5¢ per round early last month, about $360 per crate. 1080 round tins on other sites were selling for $179-$189.

My main interest is in finding out what the ammo was selling for when it was first imported.

Wish my dad was still around, he would probably have your answer, but I think he was using Romanian 5.45 in the mid-late 90s. Have no idea what he was paying, but, as far as I recall, it was not abundant. Didn't realize 7n6 was that recent in making it to the US.

I personally got my first AK74 in 2010, same year as you, OP, and one spam can was about $150 in CA. Cheapest I ever got one for though was about $130. Sorry, no additional input. AKFiles will have a few guys, like Wolfsburgbob or Insider, that can throw a number your way. I personally don't want to know how much I've overpaid on it, ha.

It first showed up for sale on 4/27/2006 with Dan's Ammo and Akron Armory being the first to get it to market @ $300 per crate.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_4_64/85661_Russian_5_45_7N6_PS_Military_ammo_now_on_Dan_s_website.html

By 6/22/2007, Ohio Rapid Fire was advertising a crate @ $209.95.

ETA: Prior to this (2003-2004 time frame), Chief Thunder was working to bring it in with the supposed price of $165 a crate. This did not happen (long story...look it up) and it remained a rarity which sold for $1 a round.

When I first started paying attention to it, it was $120-130 per tin. That was probably 6 or 7 years ago.

I don't remember when, but most of my stash was purchased during a Century monthly special @ $97/tin delivered.

I remember, sometime ago, I bought a crate of Polish x54r and a crate of Romy 8mm for less than $100. Surplus ammo seems to almost always start out low then shoot up in price.

I bought 10 cans of it from Century in December of 2009 at 108.00 a can delivered. $0.10 a round.

That was the cheapest I ever saw it, but I hadn't paid attention to it before then. It went steadily up from there.

I never bought a crate at once.  Usually just a can at a time, or boxes of smaller units from places like Sportsman's Guide.  Out here on the far West coast, shipping is often a killer.  My notes show the following purchases:

Russia2 $85.00 600        boxlooseE1200Apr-09
Bulgaria1 $130.00 1080canlooseE1080Apr-07
Russia1 $124.00 1080canlooseF1080Mar-07

Those prices are delivered to me.  A couple of months ago I sold another can and used the proceeds to buy 500 rounds of Golden Tiger.

It was non-existant here prior to 2006. Some guys had a little bit in their collections, but it was a rarity. When I first started shooting 5.45 in 2002, you either got Wolf, barnaul, silver bear, or some of the Romanian stuff. It was a little bit more expensive than 7.62x39, but not much. The real deal back then was the E.German bakelite mags for $4 a piece.

$100 a can with free shipping from century around April of 2008 if I recall correctly, it was a sale and it went back to around $120 a can after that. Bought about half a dozen tins. At the shows it was $159 a can.
I was also buying .308 ammo made in India for 10 cents a round because everyone was scared to shoot it.. My saiga liked it just fine.
I bought a lot of ammo before the elections, figured it was going to go crazy.
Between 05' and 06' wolf 7.62x39 ammo was $95 per 1000, so the $100 tins did not seam like that great a deal.

One thing I regret not buying was 7.62x25 ammo, it was $75 a tin for almost six months.

Now that Rguns doesn't have Tula Krinks, there is no reason for me to ever buy something from them ever again. Gun industry CS sucks more than any other, but Rguns really takes it to the next level.

Cleaning IS training, isn't it?  That's what the NCO's used to say.

I remember when the 5.45 ammo and the AK-74's took the country by storm...this was in the mid to late 1990's.  Tennessee Guns was a big importer, and I bought 2 of the Romy AK-74 rifles.  They had the tack welded flash hiders on them, but that was no big deal.  Upturned bolt carrier as well, they were great rifles.  Ammo was cheap..from what I remember it was around $120.00 per 1000 rds of Russian lead core.  Romanian 5.45 was available as well for about the same price, then the steel core hit the markets for aobut the same or just a tad bit higher in price.  I don't have either of the guns now, nor any ammo as well.  I had at 1 time close to 12K of the ammo in a mix of countries and types.  People didn't learn from back in the early '90s or so when Clinton allowed the Chinese stuff to be stopped, because of a pistol being made in the caliber and the copius amounts of Chinese steel cored PS ammo available.  Now, thanks to people making a pistol in this caliber as well, the market and the shooter is being screwed.  I'm just glad, for the time being, that I don't own a rifle that depends on foreign surplus or suppliers to be able to shoot.  Just my opinion...

I remember seeing prices of like $69, $79 for a tin of the stuff back in 05, 06.

At the time it made me consider going 5.45 but I preferred 7.62 since it was only about $100/case.

+1

AIM had it for, IIRC, $119 per tin if you bought two.  It then slowly crept up to $129, etc.  Most I bought at $119, some $129.  They had it for $159 not that long ago and I held off buying more until the prices came back down which won't happen.

ETA:  AIM had Romanian 7.62X25 for $119/1224 round tins all day long for at least a couple of years it seemed.

I can remember picking it up at gun shows for $98 a spam can (that is 9 cents per), I think that was in "08 or 09".
I've got a case in shipment for a buddy he agreed to pay $450 for the full case.
I told him to get it now because there won't be any more, "you got to pay to play".

this was the cheapest I ever paid for it..

I got 14 tins(all Bulg i think) and pissed my wife off,I was still in the doghouse from buying a bunch of 7.62x51 from J&G.

I think I paid about $250 per crate for most of mine except for 2 crates I got form AIM for $350 with free shipping a couple of months ago,I should have bought a couple more
