I will know how much loose fits in a standard 50 can today when I dump it all.

I can get 1000 rounds of Wolf Gold .223 in a 50 cal can in 20 round boxes.
It's a tight fit.

The last box on the front edge of the can gets crushed a bit by the rubber seal in the lid.

1,000 rounds of 7.62x39 will fit in a standard mil spec 50 cal can loose.

Not a round more.

That's my result as well.
Unless you spend an inordinate amount of time aligning each cartridge to maximize density, exactly 1,000 will fit with a tiny amount of breathing room.

No challenge.  You need room to squeeze a desiccant pack in there and it will be very tight.   Tighter than 1,200 rounds of 5.56 in the same can.

As I loaded it I gave it a lot of shaking to settle the rounds better.  I think if you don't do this, you might come up short fitting 1k in there.

Oh yeah, if you have the patience of a bonsai tree curator with the skill of an origami expert then I'm sure you can fit a whole lot more in there.   My goal was "loose", just a few shakes as you fill it should satisfy that requirement.

Just a heads up for anyone needing cans.  My local Costco(Pompano Beach) had a 2 pack (1 50cal, and 1 30cal) for 14.95.  The 30 cal. comes inside the 50 cal.

520 rounds loose 7.62x39 fit in a .30 cal can. Prob could stuff in more.

You know what would be nice is stickies with each brand and photos for each layer.  For instance, I bought some Wolf, 7.62x39mm, HP, 123 Grain and had no luck getting them neatly in a 50 cal can.

Don't have the full pic, but two rows of 25 stripper clipped 762x39 rds fit's nicely, but that's only 500 rds

Cut a sheet of cardboard between the top and bottom stack

I'd seen it done with others buying ammo in the can, but could never quite get it all to fit when I did it as I didn't know the magic pattern... .

I see Photo Bucket ruined the picture. So here it is again.

One full case of Golden Tiger in a USGI 50 cal can. Very simple...all layers are the exact same.

I keep a minimum amount of it set back and anything over that number is my blasting ammo, as I rotate it out.

I got some a few weeks ago, grade 3, and they were in really good shape.  A few had some small amounts of rust, but nothing major, especially for the price with free shipping.
