Same Price???

Go with the HP

HP = Hollowpoint = more damage to enemy, less penetration through walls.  Usually more expensive.

FMJ = Full metal Jacket = the bullet is pretty solid, "not hollow". = less damage in ballistics test, more penetration through walls, barriers, etc.  Usually cheaper.

Which would you prefer to use, the FMJ or the HP?

Buy the Hollow Point.

from wikipedia:

"Despite the ban on military use, hollow-point bullets are one of the most common types of civilian and police [4] due largely to the reduced risk of bystanders being hit by over-penetrating or ricocheted bullets, and the increased speed of incapacitation."

The Tula Cartridge Works , founded in 1880, is one of the most significant world producers of small-arms ammunition.

Some ranges only allow one or the other.

Target Pratice = FMJ
Personal Defense= HP...
SHTF= anything that works

I have found little difference in the Tula FMJ and HP performance wise, as in the HP performs almost exactly like the FMJ (then again, none of my Tula HP has had the 8M3 bullet). One of my local ranges requires HP rifle ammo, so it's handy to have cheap HP, but to me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other...

Some AKs feed FMJ more reliably than HP.

The hollow point will expand if it hits a dense fluid medium at 12,352 fps. The fmj won't.

Most commercial Russian 7.62x39 Hollow-Point bullets will perform no better than FMJ with regards to terminal ballistics. The exception is the 8M3 design which is not loaded by Tula.

Some AK style rifles will not reliably feed HP bullets. Most will.  However, FWIW, The AK was designed around the FMJ profile.

Some ranges have all sorts of crazy rules about shooting ONLY HP or ONLY bullets that will not stick to a magnet. Some even extend the magnet test to the cartridge case. Tula ammunition (FMJ or HP) will fail both of these tests. Call ahead if you don't know what your range will allow you to shoot.

For general plinking, I prefer FMJ but shoot HP if that is what is available. For defensive preps, I keep a few mags loaded with Ulyanovsk loaded 8M3 or South African M1A3. Yugo M67 is a good choice as well for SHTF use. As always, JMHO-YMMV.

I cannot thank you guys enough for all the input as I just got my AK.  I'll see how it all works out as I picked up 2000 rds of the HP and 1400 rds of the FMJ.

You might want to read this to determine if a given 124 HP is 8M3 or designed similarly to it.

In a nutshell a small sewing needle can be moved around inside the hollow point cavity to find those pre-cut lines.
