Can someone tell me approximately how many loose 7.62x39 rounds will fit in a small ammo can?  How many fit in the larger can (50 cal I think)?

I have a standard 5.56/223 USGI ammo can & I barely got 1K loose rounds into it. I just did it last night. Tula ammo.

I always just fill them with 900rds.

It gives me an excuse to buy 9,000 rounds at a time, so I can have enough to fill the 10th can.

So, appoximately 900-1000 for the SMALL can. Correct?   For some reason, I thought the small can would only hold around 500.

it would, if the rounds were still in boxes.  Give it a try, find out, let us know how you did.

BTW, the small cans are generically referred to as .30 cal cans & the next  size up, fifties.  Although they can all come packed with anything from fuses to 12 gauge, 5.56mm, etc.  stencil on the side of the can tells ya what it originally held.

Seems like I tried to get 1k of loose 7.62x39 into the smaller cans and it was just too tight. 900 as mentioned before sounds about right.

A little over 1k of 7.62x39 will fit in a .50 BMG can.

1k in a .50, but it's tight.

I can fit 1k of Wolf, Golden Tiger, (other similar sized boxes) in a small (50cal) one in the boxes, so at least that much should fit in one if the rounds are loose.

ETA: By "small" I meant a 50 cal ammo can.... don't know why I thought the OP was talking about something bigger, like a "fat 50" or something like that for a bigger can.

1k will fit tight in a .30 can and easily in a .50 can.

1k rounds of 7.62x39 will never fit in a 30cal ammo can.  That's nonsense.

I was able to perfectly fit 500 rounds into a 5.56 ammo can.

Nice and neat, 1250.

Holy hell how long did that take.

P.S. those stack on "cabinets" would not stop a 10 year old with a crow bar. You might as well duct tape you ammo cans to the floor.
I tossed mine and replaced it with a "job box" lag bolted to my floor. With prices the way they are and going to be it is worth it!
My mags and ammo now sleep tight!

Don't know about the small ammo can but the big "fat 50" ammo box will fit exactly 1600 rounds packed neatly in their boxes.  Box fully loaded weighs 60lbs.

All of my 7.62x39mm is packed in original boxes in .30 cal. cans. 500 rounds in boxes fit inside with enough airspace to probably fit another 50 loose rounds, but I never tried to or felt the need. I've never tried to pack any into larger cans because I have no interest in moving or carrying all that weight!
