How do you store ammo in your ammo can? Do you keep in the original box or do you store it loose? I can fit about 45bxs of 7.62x39 into my ammo can, but I imagined if I remove the rounds from boxes I can probably fit more then a 1000rds into a single can.

Any input would help. Thank

I keep em in boxes. Makes it much easier to track my inventory and grab the amount I want to grab fire the range or a class. If its surplus ammo, I usually leave it in the sealed tin til I'm ready to open it up, then it goes in a closeable can. Also, if I ever get out of a caliber or decide to give/sell some stock, I don't have to take forever counting to figure out how much I'm giving.

I actually use 40mm cans for bulk storage, so fitting rounds on there isn't a concern. If I run out of space, I get more cans.

I keep my go to ammo in their boxes in 50cal cans and my range ammo loose in 50cal cans.

With the loose rounds it's like a keg party...top the top and let your friends enjoy.

Where do you buy your cans?

To keep on topic, I keep them in the original boxes but I've been pondering keeping some surplus loose in ammo cans.

I keep it in the original boxes in the can. I can fit 1500 rounds boxed and stacked. I keep 40 mags loaded and in ammo cans as it is easier to transport or grab and go if need be.

Keep all of mine in the original boxes in a ammo can.
If you have loose ammo you can guess at how much you have by weighing the ammo.@40lbs per 1000 of 7.62x39

For Yugo 7.62x39, I have 640 rounds in boxes per 50 cal.
For 7N6, I can fit 1 spam can per 50 cal. Once the 50 cal. is empty, I open another spam can.
For 5.56, I either leave them in boxes of put them on stripper clips.

I like to unpack spam can ammo and store it in .50 cans. 600 rounds of 54r fits nicely in a .50 can.

i store my rounds loose in a .50 cal. ammo can...i do this to cut down on the paper cluter at the range/field and can store more ammo loose than packed in paper box/wrappers...also easyer and way faster to load in magazines than fighting to get the packing off...vince g. 11B Inf...

Anything I plan on shooting gets dumped loose into .30 cal cans while my SHTF storage stays in the original boxes/tins. I have a few .50 cal cans but mostly use those for mags and accessories.

I put most of my in 50 cal with the original box. I been thinking of putting most of ammo on stripper clips, but the “speed loader” doesn’t really make any faster to load. Sometime I can load 3 clips without problem, but most of time it just doesn’t work.

Actually... You can fit 1,000 rounds of Wolf (Black box or MC) or Golden Tiger in a .50 can in the boxes if you pack it right. Possibly some others, that's just what I have packed that way. I know that Brown Bear will not fit in a .50 can this way though, since they have a slightly different sized box.

I keep some loose, some on stripper clips, and some in the original boxes... no particular preference for me.

Keep them in the original boxes. Then, pack them into cans.

If needed............

Buy more ammo cans.

LULA. It's also good for unloading a magazine.

The "fat .50 cal" ammo cans can fit exactly 80 boxes of 7.62x39 ammo packed perfectly snug. The cans weigh 66lbs fully loaded so you can get a great workout without the need of kettlebells.

1600 rounds of fun per can.
