There's a wide array of ammunition avaliable in 7.62 russian short but who makes the best round for taking down whitetail in a single well placed shot from either an SKS or AK? I'm more interested in the AK with the 16" barrel though, as it will be easier to manuver through the woods with the shorter barrel rifle. And with all shots being 100 yards and closer it will be plenty of gun for the job... not to mention they're more than rugged enough for anything a hunting environment will throw at em.

I'd use a good Ballistic tip, SP or HP design. Hornady makes a good BT (v-max). Check out the recommended ammo thread tacked at the top of this section.

I've got a surplus of Brown Bear 125gr soft point around the house I picked up super cheap a few years ago. I've been taking those out since this last season but haven't made a shot on a whitetail with them yet.

As long as you get acceptable accuracy From it I'd use that. It should do the job nicely.

ETA IIRC in one of the G&A "book of the AKs" it was a recommended load.

In all honesty the Brown Bear 125gr SP ammo tends to be more accurate than I am anyways. I think it should do nicely. I might check into some Hornady 123gr V-Max loads as well though. I've heard of pretty impressive results on whitetail with those loads from a 16" barreled AK.

I also have some Barnaul 122~123gr HP steel case that I use as more of a multi purpose plinking/pest control round which has proved to have decent expansion in animals such as coyote but they just don't mushroom out enough for a deer I wouldn't think.

Picked those up about 5 years ago from a fella who had an SKS but sold it and didn't need the 400+ rounds of ammo.... Got the whole lot for 20 bucks

For HP I would make sure it was the 8m3 (IIRC) loading that the older wolf MC HP used.

I couldn't tell ya what load it is to be honest. That's why I just use it for general purpose ammo and target practice.

Thanks for the link sparky923, that's good ammo. I use Super X in .30-06 SPRG and .30-30 WIN as well as Remington Core-Lokt. Does Remington offer Core-Lokt in 7.62x39mm?

I've used Federal softpoint on two deer, and they both dropped without a second step.

My brother used his Weatherby in .300 mag. and his deer ran off...

I think the 30-30 & 7.62x39 work well beyond what their ballistic numbers show because they deposit most of their energy IN the target, rather than through the target.

Agreed, maximum kinetic energy transferal into the target seems to me like it would be more efficient at killing in one shot than the temporary wound channel created by other rounds which pass though rather than stop.

Who knows, I might not know jack sh!t but that's how my mind works at times.

For what its worth, I was VERY surprised what the PMC softpoint did to a deer I shot a few years back. Entered the chest on a quartering shot, took the top of the heart off, travelled and busted the liver in half, and broke the last two ribs on the opposite side on the way out.

That was with PMC SP 7.62x39mm? What grain weight?

I bought 500 rounds of Tula soft-point and I'm willing to bet it does just fine this next season :)
