I was checking my safe guns and found rust in bore of my SKS. Never shot any corrosive AFAIK. Call it neglect on my part, nevertheless I've got rust. Interrestingly enough, the rust is located where the groove meets the land, right in the shoulder where it meets the land. Just a thin line of rust next to the land. I checked on this section, and one chap suggested Kroil. Anyway, I've been religously soaking and scrubbing this bore for the last two weeks. I've removed a lot of rust but it still persists. Thinking about ordering some Corrosion-X and see how that works Any suggestions from the tribe would be deeply appreciated.P.S. I stayed away from common rust removers because I don't want to damage the blueing. Thank you.

Go shoot 50 rounds or so, then clean it. Nothing better to remove light rus that squeezing a larger diameter object through a small tube. It will take it all out the muzzle. Then use Windex with ammonia to clean the bore and oil.

Don't use windex to clean your firearms it's nonsense. If you're worried about shooting corrosive ammo just flush your firearm with water, dry and then clean as usual.

Nonsense huh? Keeps my black powder guns from rusting and it's all I use.

IIRC, winded since nice to use as the ammonia dries it all up, but the water is really what flushes it out.

Yeah well you just keep paying more for your windex and I'll keep using water like I have for 40 years with black powder as well as corrosive primed centerfire ammo. Windex isn't some magic cleaner and the small amount of ammonia isn't doing shit, it's the water in windex which is doing the work. Windex is almost all water. This is all been proven but there's just some people that don't get it.

Windex doesn't have any ammonia in it. It's water, perfume, soap, alcohol, and coloring.

Don't believe me, look at the MSDS. Ammonia is hazardous and would be listed on the MSDS if it had any.

I just use soapy water after shooting corrosive ammo. I also leave the bore coated with a light coat of gun oil.

And you would be wrong, maybe if you had done some research? I use the industrial grade which has ammonia in it.

I've never seen that one before.

I guess it's the home use products that they quit using ammonia in.

Some of the off brand glass cleaners still have ammonia too.  I don't remember where I got mine, but it lists ammonia right on the front label.

Once again you're wasting your time and money. Using Windex with or without ammonia is retarded when plain water does the same damn thing. It's a proven fact. I laugh at anyone who uses windex and thinks it's some superior magic potion. Boiling or near boiling water work 100% better but even cold water from a garden hose or a creek, pond or river will work. Just make sure to use some oil. Save the windex for your windows.

Not that it matters, and not that Windex or ammonia will do anything, but this is cut and pasted from the Windex site, FYI:

All but two Windex® Glass and Multi-Surface Cleaners contain detergents, solvents, fragrance, Ammonia-D®, and alcohol. They should not be used if ammonia is not recommended for use on surface. (Windex® Multi-Surface Vinegar and Windex® Outdoor Multi-Surface do not contain ammonia. They are safe to use in these cases.)

Ammonia-D is ammonia, not some mystery, proprietary molecule.  SC Johnson just thought it sounded cool, I guess.

Now you are ready for trivia night.

Ballistol /water mix works best for me. Plus I don't need a degree in chemical engineering to know whether or not the ammonia I'm putting in my barrel is the same type that's found in aggressive copper removing bore cleaner, which tends to damage barrels if left in for too long.
