I have been using spray engine degreaser to clean my AK rifles. Spray it, let it foam and run, wait, wipe it off then oil. I see the soap and water method is preferred. I just don't want anything to rust. I have always thought that water and guns don't mix. Maybe I am wrong.

They do if you are trying to get rid of water-soluble salts which attract moisture and corrode everything they are deposited onto.

This is why the old boiling water method works so well. It dissolves the salts and the hot metal dries almost instantaneously.

Then spray or wipe with some sort of CLP.

Potassium chloride is neither greasy nor soluble in oil.

I would be concerned with what chemicals the degreaser might be leaving behind on the AK.

All the spray degreasers that I've used, basically are soap. You spray them on, then hose them off. Are you talking about something different?

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.
