For not having built on a "flat" in over 5 years, I think this build is coming out fairly well. 1st time at using a virgin barrel, not as hard as one may think. All relief cuts done with diamond bits/dremel. Headspace was a breeze, no major issues with fitment. Ak-Builder flats are better than I anticipated. Who knows, I may never order another manufactured receiver again... :-) << may rethink that statement.

Yeah, M64's have milled recievers with screwed in barrels. The parts kits come torch cut and the middle portion is MIA. I removed the barrel from the front stub, milled it down to the dimensions similar to a Romy front trunion, packed the locking lugs and barrel threads with welding heat sink and tig welded it together. Pretty much the same thing for the rear portion of the reciever as well. I did see a HRC drop in the rear portion though, the trunion is only about 1mm thick after milling it down. There was no anealing in the front at the locking lugs and everything seems to be holding up well. I don't think I'll build another one of the M64's though. |

This build only solidifies my conviction that these can be built in virtually any way and with very few tools. And yet our goobernant thinks regulating them is the answer, if we as law abiding citizens can build them so can criminals. I can say the harder part is over and I can relate to the sense of never wanting to build another again at the point you are at, bad news is you probably will change your mind. Great pictures though!

Hmmm, well here’s my latest in process pics... Thanks for the encouraging words above but I’m building one ugly, ugly flippin’ rifle. Its head spacing is perfect; its bolt carrier racks flawlessly, but after that its one steaming nauseating disgusting mess…

That has to be the sexiest AK build I have seen in a long time! I love it, it's got me thinking about building more...asshole!

Overall it’s turning out to be ‘more-than-the-sum-of-its parts’ but ‘some-its-parts’ I’ve really f’ed up – namely my receive warped when I heat treated it to making it twist slightly to the right. The barrel and trunion somehow managed to orient itself somewhat to the left. Therefore I tipped my gasblock faintly to the right to compensate. Every flippin’ thing is visibly out of alignment on this thing!... But, for whatever reason, it feels solid as a rock and it has one of the most smoothest actions of any AK that I’ve ever racked in my life... Somehow I am succeeding in spite of myself… |

I'm just curious what the bolt gun between the Uzi and the Mossberg is? But, room pics would be cool too...

I know this is the BIY section but I can't seem to im the pic to you so...The rifle you are asking about is a Beaumont-Vitali 1875 (11.3x51R). And I do have the cleaning rod. Update; 1/22/11 Finished this one. For the most part I'm happy with it. I definitely like building with ready made receivers though.
And just for fun... I finally figured out what the G was for.

Your flat bending job looks like a million dollars compared to mine! If I ever build another AK again I have a NoDak Spud NDS-3 sitting in the back of the safe. But to reiterate, holy cow, I think that can I totally relate! |

Thank you, I like the lack of paperwork and fees of the 'you bend em' flats, but for fit and time savings, the ready made Ewbanks and NDS receivers are my 1st choices. I have 3 more builds to do and I think I'll end up getting a mfg'd receiver for one of them (Yugo M70AB2). Now as for your build, I have a couple questions. First what's the plate on the front of the receiver for? (spacer for screws that are a bit too long???) And second, what's under the receiver at the very front (under front trunnion) And lastly, did you make the side rail mount for this build? I've never seen one like that. My first build was a screw build and I wish I had been as creative as you. Maybe I would have been able to overcome the problems I experienced. |

I hear you on the outside temps, I test fired my recently built Bulgarian AK 74 yesterday. Basically I went to the back of the car (in the desert) got it out and after shooting the first shot and noticed it was still holding up, I shot the rest of the mag as fast as I could. Tossed it in the trunk and got back in the car. I may live in a desert but it doesn't mean it's always hot. 14 degrees without the wind chill factor (the wind was around 30 MPH). |

My first build was a screw build and I wish I had been as creative as you. Maybe I would have been able to overcome the problems I experienced. This video on YouTube really impressed me as to how much the AK will deflect under recoil... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeeeFxA_9nA The ‘things’ you see on the front of the receiver are 'gusset plates' made to sandwich the trunion to the receiver in an effort to stiffen this area up to some degree. The ‘thing’ under the receiver is just a run-of-the-mill #10-32 ‘sling stud’. At my gun club, I shoot in our High-Power League and most shooters’ find that fastening a sling in a manner that tensions the barrel nearly always screws-up accuracy and repeatability. Therefore I placed my sling stud on the underside of the front tip of the receiver to keep “sling tension” off the barrel as much as possible. Furthermore for High-Power this project is only going to be a ‘range-toy’ to shoot practice matches with just purely for the heck of it –– for the real thing I shoot a tuned-up AR15… The scope mount is a Chinese made Mosin-Nagant PU mount fastened to the receiver’s center support and to the inside of the receive. The scope is a Weaver model KV. If anything, it’s funky! |

… did a little test firing...
It has potential. At best, I think that it will be a 3MOA rifle when it’s actually done. Reliability needs some improvement (I think that it was largely due to my US made aftermarket magazine.) Also the buttstock is going to go in the coming weeks in favor of a thumbhole stock (believe it or not I’m one of the three people in the world that actually likes them) which I plan to lengthen by at least 2 inches…

And I think that I’ll be swapping out the Weaver KV scope with a Simmons or Leaper 3-9x32mm scope. The Weaver is little low-powered (2-5x) for the job and it's actually a too nice of a piece of glass to use for this application. The rifle’s very accurate (as AKs’ go) and extremely reliable but it looks quite crude, like it belongs on the set of a “Planet of the Apes” sequel … Also, I did finally get it out to 100 yards and it will produce consistent 3 inch, 10 shot groups w/ either Wolf or Golden Triger 122gr FMJ… Over the next winter I’ll build another AK and apply all the lessons learned here to build a higher-end version and use the Weaver KV then… I’ll post more pics when this one’s fully complete… |

My one and only, completed Dec. 2009.
Romy G with Romy-style (lever-action) wire folder. Tapco flat, home-rolled with the 'grasshopper jig' (instructions can be found on Gunco.net), screwed not riveted. :) I also messed with the fore grip, since it was incredibly uncomfortable.
Added a index/middle finger partition bump and a knobby deal on the bottom. Contoured the back end to fit my thumb better, and added a notch in the back for easier mag quick-changes (mag 2 smacks the release and kicks mag 1 out of the way, then insert mag 2). I gave the receiver a quick cold-blue, then flat black spraypaint. :) - CK |
