Hey guys, So one thing I could never figure out is how to clean inside the barrel extension thoroughly... I use a chamber brush which works but it leaves a lot of loose carbon just sitting in there.. How do you clean it out?! View Quote Lately I've been using chamber mops after brushing. Prior to that I used an oversized patch on the end of a pistol rod to clean it out. http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-chemicals/patches-mops/bore-mops/ar-15-m16-ar-style-308-chamber-mop-prod18227.aspx |

Holy shit man...that thing is filthy - how often do you clean it (in terms of rounds fired). I never let my rifles get that dirty - I always clean at or, before 500 rounds. What you need is a Dewey AR15 chamber cleaning kit and q-tips. https://www.rainierarms.com/img/shop/product/a3dc5679e319d55bf8a2363baa6e6048.jpg View Quote This is the kit I use also. |

I clean my chamber, bore and action parts after every shoot. Whether its 50 rounds or 1000.
But Ive always just used massive amounts of Q-tips, which Im tired of doing. |
|
mine NEVER gets dirty...because I only use my rifle in my basement in front of the mirror while saying "Pew Pew, Pew Pew Pew".....and the pew cleans right up.
Actually.....Tooth brush and Q-Tips, FTW. |

I haven't had to clean one that dirty but my stuff would still work.
Carb or brake cleaner and tooth brush and a dental pick for any spot that just won't come loose. When I clean the barrel, I insert the cleaning rod from the muzzle, screw the patch tip (with bore cleaner), or brush, and pull it from the chamber to the muzzle end. That removes the crud from the barrel without putting it back into the chamber/locking lug area, so my rifles are easier to clean up. I want the crud out of the rifle, not just moved from one place to another in the rifle. |
|
I know this is the cleaning section of arf, but I wouldn't even clean that off mechanically. I would spray that area with CLP and then run a patch down the bore.

Gotta get one of those... I'm tired of using one hundred bajillion q-tips every time. |

USGI chamber brush, qtips, and chamber stars. People bitch about how expensive the stars are, but they last a long time.
|

Chamber brush is all I have ever used, and maybe a Qtip or two.

G96 or your CLP of your preference and Qtips. Its cheap and plentiful without having to buy specialized tools.

AR15 Chamber Stars. They have cut outs to fit right between the lugs in the chamber and clean it up spotless
|
|
HOW do you use a chamber mop??? Do you soak it in solvent, do you use it dry? How do you clean them afterwards (soap and water??) I have a kit with mops, but never really knew the proper use of them.
Also, do you twist them in the chamber? Once they bottom out it doesn't seem like you would get any "scrubbing" type action (ie. it would press down against the bottom of the lugs and then get pulled out again). |
|
You buy more and keep doing it thata way until you figure something else out, it keeps the wheels turning

View Quote I use the mop dry to clean/wipe out the cleaner that was sprayed in there during the cleaning of barrel. The mops are disposable, so when they get very dirty toss it and use a new one. Yes I twist it slightly side to side as well as back and forth. For scrubbing the chamber you need a chamber brush, which I use before the mop. |

I get the medical grade wooden q tips and sever their little heads leaving just enough of the wood to clamp it with hemostats, with the swab angled back toward the finger grips slightly. This will even get the back of the lugs. I don't just discard the wooden shaft that I cut off- I sharpen it and use it with a cleaning patch to clean the groove between the barrel and extension. I also use the swabs/stars/mops, and my pinky finger in an old GI t shirt.

Get some cheap hemostats amf cut the tips off qtips. Pit them at a 45 degree angle and clean away with solvent on the qtip. Cheap and easy.
Edit: fuck! Beat to the punch! |

I use a nylon Dewey chamber brush, Dewey short rod (as pictured above by another poster), and take a small strip of paper-towel, wrap it once, and ream the chamber area with it. It works great. I use these, and they resist tearing very very very well. They kindof blurr the line between disposable and washable, lol

Get the losso brushes and a Dewey rod and you won't have carbon like that when you are done. I now use nothing but losso brushes on every firearm, they last 10 times longer than bronze or brass brushes.
