Great post, it's information like this that makes this place invaluable to both the old and new. And as noted, the laminating and key ring idea is truly awesome.

Wanted to thank you for posting this. I shot my new M&P today and used your guidelines. It helped out a lot. No issues what so ever.

Chart doesn't address the bore. After cleaning, what is your opinion on running a light lube on a patch thru the bore? All of my rifles and handguns I do that, but maybe with the chrome lined barrel, it may not be necessary. Great info btw.

That is why lubing of the bore is not included. I personally run a lightly lubed patch down the bore for storage. |

I agree, this is very useful. I do have a question though. Why do the operator manuals from the USMC and Army say "generously lube inside parts of lower receiver and extension assembly"? I don't like that idea but i have a coworker that's hell bent on "hosing it down". To me, a lot of lube would cause a ton of gunk build up and cause problems. Can anyone explain this?

So how often would you recommend re-lubing these points?

On the rare occasion I don't clean I still lube before I shoot again but that's common practice on all my firearms.

Very useful, I include this link in my "Congrats, now read this" email I send to my buddies when they buy their first AR15 and are full of questions. Thanks!

Can anyone explain this? over at LF, many of the BTDT crowd advocate spraying down bolt, carrier, lower until its wet. the lube of choice over there is Slip2000 |
