What should a cleaning kit have in it? I'll use Tapco's current selection as an example.

I've been looking for metal patch holders for my AR-15s for years. I had been using the plastic ones, but they would strip and get stuck in the barrel.

Where's the best place to find a Dewey rod? What length do I want for a 16" carbine that won't have any clearance issues.
They can be obtained from Brownell's. They offer a 17 inch and a 24 inch rod, and longer. -DF |

I need a good cleaning kit to replace my old and military kit. I basically have a box full of odds and ends. Its a real mess. The more I research the more confussed I get with all the different systems and choices. I'm actually looking at the Otis system. I never tried it and some people say stay away others say its the best thing since slice bread. Anyone have a better solution? Is this kit worth $196?

I bought an M16 kit sold by Brigade Quartermasters at the Post Clothing Sales the other day.
I was pleased to find out that it is really an all-purpose military cleaning kit; it came with the standard rod sections, bottle, and 5.56 bore and chamber brushes, and additionally came with a 9mm, .45, and a .30 rifle brush as well. I can now bring this one kit to the range and have the capability to clean most of the weapons that I own. I just need to toss a very small rag in the pouch, along with some larger caliber patches and I should be good to go. It's no Dewey, but if I decide to clean at the range it should be perfect. Why can't I find the Tapco Deluxe Cleaning Kit referenced in the first post? I went to their site and they have only 2 cleaning kits available for AR15. Pouch and Butt stock kits.

I am new to the rifle/AR15 world and I am a bit confused by all the choices for cleaning products. Bottom line can I clean, lube/protect my AR by just using one type of CLP or do I need CLP, Carbon cleaner, gun oil, etc... I would appreciate any help in this area. Last thing I want to do is not protect and maintence my rifle, but I don't want to spend $$$ and wasted time over cleaning.

Stupid question, but where do I get the long Q-tips?
I tried the regular ones and they don't work anywhere near as well as the longer ones with non-flex handles. |

Just a note about cleaning an AR, if I may.
There are a large number of very good products that can be used as a solvent to clean the weapon and an equally large number of lubricants to lube the rifle. I believe that almost all of them will work fine, as long as you do the job properly. Here's a post I did on the method I use. What tools do you recommend for the barrel? I don't want to scratch or ruin the barrel, but I don't know what to use to apply solvent and the brush.

I have an otis kit around here somewhere, but for the most part I just use the USGI cleaning kit and use breakfree CLP to clean my ARs and pretty much all my guns. |

Otis is a good kit, but it takes practice to get the patch on to where it only takes ~10 lbs of force to pull through. Also, in the video the guy twists the rod in the chamber to mop it out. I did that only a few times but don't do it anymore because you can hear the jag and connection point on the rod rubbing against the throat. Sure they are brass (like the case getting rammed in there in less than ~1/12 of a second) but I don't want to chance it - so I just pull it through instead of mopping the chamber.

If you're looking for the 30" Dewey cleaning rod(22C-30) for the AR-15 16" carbine at Brownells. use part # 234000074 in their search window(it's a new item and not listed with the other Dewey rods). Dewey recommended the 30" rod. |

Not that I know of. I bought a kit from Bushmaster and the chamber brushes were junk. So I ordered chamber brushes from Kleen Bore. I would like to pick a couple more cleaning kits and the Kleen Bore kit looks like it would be better than the one I bought from Bushmaster. |

Otis has been reliable for me everytime. Its not that much of an effort to run the barrel with the flex cords they have in their m16/ar15 specific kits. Breakaway CLP and 4 or 5 times down the barrel and it will be golden.

I would add pro shot products to the list, they now have an online site where they sell all their cleaning kits, bore guides, cleaning rods, patches, etc. They sell nice quality stuff. I use all of their stuff and like it all. :)

For bolt action rifles that are cleaned from the breech while still in the stock, some prefer a rod long enough so that the handle of the rod does not come forward of the buttplate. I am sold on Otis kits. Really like the flexible cable rods which are the hallmarks of the Otis cleaning systems. Several have said that they have had issues with patches being stuck in the bore. You can also stick them with a conventional rod. The key is using the correct size of patch. I use ones designated for .22 cal weapons and they work just fine in .223/5.56 bores. No point in paying high dollars for Otis kits. You can get very good deals on E bay if you know your prices. I bought a kit designed for most military calibres, including 12 gage shotgun, for under $35.

Dont waste your time with the Mpro-7 tactical kit. I bought one todsy and assembled the rod, before using it I observed the connection points to make sure they met perfectly with no overhangs since the rod is damn near the same size as the bore (dont want to destory the rifling!). The sections, no matter what order I placed them, never met up correctly and were not perfectly straight, needless to say I scrapped the rod and used the factory one that came with my AR.. The cleaning products are effective but not worth 50 bones. Go with Otis.

I need help. After reading through several threads and ending up more confused anyway I need some direction. I have Hoppes #9 solvent and lubricating oil with a cleaning rod and patches. My uncle got me all of this for my birthday. But after reading on the internet I read that this solvent is not good on chrome barrels. No bristled brushes were included in the kit. I was wondering what else needs to be purchased to get as good of a job done as possible, without hurting the gun. Do I need a different kit? What kind of brushes do I need? If a new kit is what you think I need which one I have read through the threads but honestly not gotten much out of it (I'm new
). Any help would be appreciated.
