This is my first build and I am experiencing an annoying problem.

The rifle fires fine and recycles fine, but about one round out of fifty, the empty cartridge ejects, and the next round fails to feed.  the BCG cycles, it just fails to take the round out of the magazine.  I see faint scratches along the length of the top cartridge in the magazine.

I have used Mag Tac upper and lower, Spikes parts kits, Black River BCG, Geiselle trigger, FN light weight barrel, a standard length spring and a 3.0 ounce buffer.

I have used different magazines, metal and Magpul, and the problem persists.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I did have that problem.  The bolt would close on an empty magazine.  If I pushed the carrier release, it felt smooth.  But if I reached inside the lower and pulled up on it, like the follower would, I felt it catch.  I added oil and worked it repeatedly and it felt much smoother.  It now stays open on an empty magazine.  But the feed problem persists.

I have a rifle length spring in the buffer tube.

I also have an A-frame front sight and no easy way to adjust the gas.

Yes, I have done this test.  The carrier stays open on the empty magazine.

So,if your problem is one out of fifty, you may have to do it a lot to duplicate it.
I originally thought it was your magazine, but if it replicates with different mags it points either to mildly under-gassed or to your bolt catch.  I vote for the bolt catch given your initial problems with it.

Thanks for helping me out, HM, and others.

So (just so I understand) your theory is that the rifle is cycling too fast and the heavier buffer will slow it down a bit?

That sounds plausible to me.  When I said I saw scratches along the length of the cartridge, the scratches actually start about a quarter-inch from the primer end.  That seems to re-enforce your theory.

At any rate, changing the buffer is not going to cost much.

I hope I can get one local.

Thanks, again.  I will let you know how it comes out.
