I don't shoot an AR10 out to 1000 yards but I do use an M1A fairly regularly to do it. For 600+ yards in general you want to be using 175grn bullets as the 168's more often than not go subsonic before 1000 yards. My best results have been with Hornady 178grn AMAX, with 175grn SMK's being my next choice.

1115yd to targets... Reloaded 175gr SMK that leaves the 20" barrel about 2510fps. Bullets do fall subsonic on that distance but the holes in the paper were round (as in bullet didn't tumble when falling subsonic).

175gr SMK
You can easily push to 2600fps without pain. EDIT: I'm a VARGET dapper dan man, don't want no fop. I haven't gone with the newer RL15 that is the new "non temp' formula. BUTT!!! I've been told by those that I respect that 2700fps ain't a wrong answer is your pipe will allow it. |

The N6 and the M1A's like 175grn SMK's and they sure seem to be the most popular bullet for the .308. I normally keep the .308's at 800yds or less.

I have found m;y M1a and AR10 both prefer a 168gr bullet and almost exclusively shoot M118 or Federal Gold Medal.

I was hoping some gals would be shooting 1000 yrds. I want to get my wife involved in some long range shooting. I took her to the range with me on our float trip last month. My buddy and I took a day off from the river and went down to the Bay Branch, Missouri department of conservation range north of Eminence. It's a 300 yrd range with targets at 300, 200, 100, 75, 50, & 25 yards. It's free to the public and MDC even supplies free targets.
Anyway, I put a clay pigeon on the 200 yrd target board. When she came out after my buddy & I had been shooting for an hour, I asked her if she'd like to try the clay at 200 yrds with my M4. She said sure. The M4 is an XM177 clone vintage 1965 with peep sights. I had it sighted for 50 yrds. She sat down at the bench, without a bipod or a rest, with just her elbows on the table and sqweezed off one round. I couldn't believe what I saw in the binoculars. The clay broke! It was an amazing shot. I've seen her do that with handguns at 50 yrds, but this was the first time she's shot one of my ARs. She is awesome behind a gun! I can't wait to let her crank off some rounds at 1000 yrds. What barrel twist do you all use for the 175 bullets? |
