Anyone using an AR-10 in the Heavy Metal class at 3-gun or tactical rifle matches.
I got a pump 12ga and a Series 70 1911 and am considering a rifle for heavy metal to go along with my normal 3-gun setup. (5.56 AR, Tac4 Rem & M&P9 PRO)

I was just wondering how the AR-10's are holding up to heavy use. Does accuracy drop off when they heat up, any parts prone to wear or failure other than a standard 5.56 AR and are you smoking any of the guys with the M-1A SOCOM's? What barrel length are you using?

The accuracy is pretty consistent on mine, but it is free floated so that makes a difference. I see around 1 MOA from my rifle shooting Sierra 135gr SMKs and around 1.5 - 2 MOA shooting M80 ball. I find that the mirage off the barrel becomes a big issue far before the accuracy on the barrel drops off. You cant hit what you cant see... Also, I have never shot a stage that required more than 50 rounds in a row that also required high precision, so for my purposes, hot barrel accuracy is more than good enough. Most arrays requiring high precision have a round count less than 30 in my experience.

I have beaten a few M-1A drivers and vice versa, but I just shoot heavy division for fun. The one major match I shot heavy division in (Texas MG) did not go so well because I didnt have time to test my reloads before the match and they were short cycling the gun because the powder I was using was burning too fast and I didnt have enough gas port pressure. Poor planning + Murphy's law. Every other load I have tried with that powder worked fine, go figure.

I love the AR-10, I honestly don't see why you would want to shoot anything else in Heavy div.
