Hi all, I just ordered from Stormwerkz the extended length high rise scope base for my Sterling AR180. I have an original that I got with the gun when I bought it about 23 yrs ago, but it just is not flexible, the top is a single piece so it either has to sit behind or in front of the adjustment knobs! I want to start shooting it again and see what it's potential really is, I will let you know how the base works as son as I get it and try it out. Anyone else have their bases? How did they work out for you? Take care and keep your powder dry. . .Rudy

I have a Stormwerkz scope base (short type) for the AR-180, and it's a fine product. There's a potential problem, however, but it's not in the Stormwerkz base but rather in the dovetail that's spot-welded to the top of the AR-180 receiver. I have two AR-180's –– an original Costa Mesa and a Howa. The Stormwerkz base is OK on the Costa Mesa but is noticably misaligned on the Howa. It seems that the Howa was not made with quite the precision as the original Costa Mesa. From what I've seen, the Sterling was made with even less precision than the Howa.

The extended length Stormwerkz base would tend to accentuate any misalignment even more.

Cross your fingers and hope that the base works on your Sterling.

+1 - I think the Howa base is slightly different - the Stormwerkz and MI(?) 180 mounts are not tight - I bought both. However - an original Armalite AR-180 scope I picked up off the EE fits fine. Must be some small difference in angle or just a skoosh difference in dimensions somewhere.

YMMV

Hi folks! I had received the Stormwerkz extended high rise base and it locks up tight! No shifting or play at all and I did check alignment as others have suggested and it is spot on! I am very impressed with it. I mounted a rubber armored 3x9x40 on it, boresighted it and am now just waiting for the weather here in Az to cool off, at least into the 90s so I can try it out! I will fill you in on the results after that. A question for you all, has anyone any experience with using the SW AR180B handguard rail on an original 180? I would love to have it but am very reluctant to remove the front sight base to do it. Has anyone used it? What are your feelings about it? I would love to be able to mount a bipod or possibly a front vertical grip. Thanks and stay cool!. . . Rudy

Rudy,
Regarding the StormWerkz handguard rail on an AR-180 and whether it will fit:
The simple answer is yes.
But since the older 180's have a heat shield a small adjustment needs to be made to the inside mounting plate that comes with the rail.
The full length plate won't slip in between the handguard and heat shield so the center section must be cut out so the two end pieces with the tapped holes can be slipped in to position. The lengths of the two end pieces needs to be about 1.25-1.375 just longer than the vent hole at the bottom of the handguard.
All in all it takes about 5 minutes if you have a metal cutting saw like a hacksaw.
Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Josh, so I would be able to install the rail without having to remove the lower handguard and heatsheild from the receiver? Would I just be sliding the two parts in? If so that would be great! Thanks alot for your help. Take care. . . Rudy

All the S.W. stuff I have had was aerospace grade craftsmanship and worked as advertised or better.
Well worth the money and the they are a pleasure to deal with. You will not be disappointed.

Thats right, just slip the threaded plates between the guard and heatshield no need to removed the front sight.

Thanks for the info Josh, as soon as budget allows (kid in college!) I will place an order. It's great to breathe life back into this old girl. I haven't fired it in over 20 yrs! I used to use Portugese 5.56 in it and was always pleased with it. Anyone have any suggestions as to what spare parts to pick up incase of breakage? The only thing missing is the plunger and spring are missing that you press to allow you to depress the recoil rod guide in for disassembly, anyone know where to get a replacement for it? Or any parts that will work in its place? Thanks in advance. . . Take care,Rudy

The butt stock hinge is kinda fragile and don't let the hammer drop on the bolt stop when the upper/ lower receive are opened up shotgun style.
Other than that these rifles are pretty tough. You already know how accurate they are.

Contact Pete Fliess for parts ( IIRC he posts here as shortfal ) he is the dean and guru of all things AR180.

Mags shouldn't be a problem as it is easy enough to mod Israeli Orlite 30's.

Insert mag, reach through gap between mag catch and receiver and scratch a line with the tip of an Xxacto knife.
Remove mag and use the tip of a butter knife heated red hot to melt a slot in the mag body next to the line. Trim the slot as needed with the Exacto knife.
Whittle a bit off the shelf on the back end of the magazines follower (easier done with the follower removed) where it pushes up on the bolt stop to lower that because it a little high for the 180.

P-Mags are better mags than Orlites. Nobody has done the mod using P-Mags that I know of.
Who wants to go first and post pics ?

Hmm, B44t you got me thinking. Time to find some PMAGs to do some tinkering and Enistein number crunching.

I have the Stormwerkz scope mount on my Sterling and it works great. I also added a rail to the bottom of my hand guard for a grip, etc. I purchased a replacement set of hand guards from Armalite so I wouldn't have to modify my original hand guards.
