I have an old RRA  wylde chambered barrel. I was checking headspace and it closes on a No go. 223 rem gauge But it does not close on a Field gauge.  I tried this with similar results with different and new bolts.  This barrel has seen all kinds of good and cheap ammo over the years.....is it still safe to shoot? I thought the general dimensions are the same or should I buy wylde specific guages..???

Go to Brownell's website and find this short video.....
I'm having trouble linking to it...

Should I be using a 223 wylde gauge instead of my 223 rem?

Short answer is no.  Here is a link from a previous discussion in the archives with a message from Bill Wylde himself.

ETA: if your barrel fails the No Go test but passes the Field gauge test, the chamber is worn but still safe to shoot.  You might start paying more attention for signs of abnormalities like shell casings showing odd marks, bulges, cracks, etc.

Which Field gage?
If it is somewhere around 1.4696” then you are GTG with headspace that is less than US mil-spec No-go.
If it is a 1.4736” Field gage you are certainly still safe.
I use a 223 REM match gage set that is also accurate for 223 Wylde and 5.56mm.
The headspace gages are the same for the three chambers, it is the specifications for the Go, No-go, and Field measurement that may be different.
