I am trying to put a free float fore end on, but for\ound the barrel not is not exact for my rifle.

It appears the holes do not line up exactly (1/8" off) so as the gas tube won't slide in.

This is close example of the barrel nut
barrel nut

The barrel nut goes on fine. The problem is it doesn't line up for the hole.

My thought is to ream out the metal in the way, between the 2 holes.

Is there a better solution???

Thanks

Go get a barrel nut shim or shims to clock it correctly.

What do you have it torqued to?  There is a wide range in this specification, usually plenty enough to get it timed properly.  Shims are typically not needed, although there is nothing wrong with using them.

Things I'd try to time correctly:
-- spec torque between 30 ft/lbs to 80 ft/lbs max with aeroshell 33ms grease on threads
-- season threads (loosen and tighten) a few times (min 3) near torque spec closest to alignment (sometimes just gets it there a hair)
-- barrel nut shims
-- lap front of reciever just a hair or square by lathe (paladin machine shop will do cheaply)
-- try a different side of barrel nut (ie, noveske nsr) or a different barrel nut (ie, if a standard brrl nut to achieve tolerance stacking in your favor)
-- try mating the barrel to a different receiver

Good luck

I have used those type of nuts many times, just follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
