I am a newbe so take it easy on me.  I am starting a 556/223 build.  I have a stripped lower and am looking at rifle build kits.   So far I am looking at a PSA kit, I like the idea that it is a kit, so hopefully all the parts that I need are included.  And like others on here have warned me it wont be my last build, and they are right , here I am already looking at the next build before I have even ordered the parts kit for my first build.  I also would like a 7.62x39, and would like to know what I need.  Can I use a AR 15 lower, and magazine?  Do I just order a complete upper in a 7.62x39?  I would like to know where to go to get parts for my build?  What would the cost difference be in the 2 builds?  My plan is to build the kit/kits and then modify my rifles as I learn what I like and don't like.  Thank you

the barrel, bolt and mag are different. i built both a 16" and 7.5" x39 ar. needed and adjustable gas block and heavy buffer for the short one

Take a good look at 7.62X35 before you decide. Only the barrel is different, everything else is the same as .223/5.56

Are the actual lowers themselves not different,  also?

Why did I think they were?

There are 7.62x39 AR's built on standard receivers, the downside is use must use a hybrid magazine that fits into the AR magwell but then has the extreme curve needed for the round after the mag is out of the magwell.

The other option is to use a lower manufactured to use the standard (more reliable) AK magazine. Then you also to have a slightly modified bolt carrier that has been narrowed to fit between the AK mag feed lips.

Ah, I see. I did not know that, but have not looked into it much.

7.62x39 bolt with enhanced firing pin an ASC 7.62X39 mag and a 7.62x39 barrel and your good to go . If buiLT put on a bushnell 3x9 shot a bunch of rds through it and killed a deer opening weekend.

If you want 7.62x39 just buy an ak47, PSA has them $699 free ship!

Then feed it russian steel ammo all day and be happy :D

It sounds like it will be harder than I thought.  I am going to have to think about what I want.  I guess a SKS would be ok, and cheaper in the long run.  Maybe I will consider a AR 10 build with a 308?   Thank you guys

I just built a really nice AR15 platform 7.62x39 for right at $850. I runs perfectly.
The only difference is the BCG (bolt only), barrel, and magazines as other have already stated. An SKS is nice to have but they too have some inherent issues if you start to accessorize them.

Well I am still thinking about the x39 build.   Yea I know SKS's are not cheap any more.  What BCG would I need to run a x39?

AIM 7.62x39 BCG's are GTG. take your pick, old school black phosphate, black nitride for a few $$ more, or nickel boron for a few more $$.  they come with the requisite enhanced firing pin.

The bolt is the only thing different as they use the same bolt carrier. I ended up purchasing the complete Rubber City Armory BCG for a few more $$ and spent a little less on my handguard to stay within my build budget. The AIM Surplus BCG are a good option as well.

Well I just watched a few youtube videos on AR 7.62x39 builds.  What you guys have been telling me make more sense.

Here is my 7.63x39 build. As others have said, the only thing different from a 5.56 AR is the bolt, barrel and mag. Although I have not ran a lot through it yet, it has been flawless.

Miron I like the look of your rifle, the AR 15 look is hard to beat.  PursuitSS On a AK type build, like your rifle, how much different is the lower build?  The AK  magazines should be easier to get.  What about parts for the AK build, are they going to be hard to come by?  If I did the AK build it would be easier to keep the magazines separate.

They DO NOT all use the same bolt carrier!

AR lowers that use standard AK magazines require a modified AR bolt carrier.

This is true but the OP inquired about 5.56/223 platform not an AR/AK platform. So therefore, the only difference is the barrel, bolt, and magazine when building a 7.62x39 using an AR platform.
