I've read up on home anodizing and it's not something I want to try.
I'm planning a 7075 aluminum project and wonder what other home based alternatives there are to anodizing?
Thanks!

I used flat black ceramic engine paint in several light coats.  I warmed the lower before painting it, then baked it at increasing temperatures and increasing time.  I think I stopped at 275 degrees for about an hour and then let it cool slowly in the oven  after the last heating session.  It turned out quite well.

I have started to gather supplies and equipment to do home anodizing. I have heard  the cons of only painting, as the thru holes(Trigger selector etc. )
are not hardened as when anodizing. Does it make a big difference?

Has anyone just thought about spraying the aluminum with Alodine and just painting it with engine paint?

What's Alodine and what would it do prior to painting?

Ceracoat, duracoat, gunkote, Alumihide 2

If you just slap paint on bare aluminum it would just flake right off. Alodine makes it so paint will adhere very well. It's a conversion coating.

they sell steel inserts that screw in to the pin holes after you enlarge them and thread em. Then the pins ride on the steel inserts and the larger screw in steel insert spreads the load out, supposedly increasing durability significantly.

Thanks for the explanation and pointer on Alodine.  Sounds like what I need as a friend that's a metallurgist said the 7075 is very corrosion resistant so difficult to apply certain finishes to.
I looked at home Cerocote finishes and while I have several compressors I don't have a media cabinet or spray equipment (yet).

What's best for anodized 80s that have a bunch of raw areas after milling?

I've seen non-anodized uppers and lowers being sold online.

If you bought one can you just not have it coated at all?

I just clear coat and bake my raw lowers, have no problems with them yet.
