I don't know if we are supposed to or not but since the spring hits the inside of the extension tube, I use a very light oil in there. Does anyone else do this or see any reason i shouldn't?

A ton of folks do it.

If there are two surfaces that touch, it should be lubricated.

I've never heard anyone say don't oil it.

i spray mine with white lithium grease, it helps take some of the "twang" sound out of the spring

I have never oiled mine...but i run Mobil 1 on the rest of the gun nice and wet...so it gets back there lol...

you are over thinking it

Yes, lubed the buffer and spring.
You'd be amazed at the amount of short stroking rifles that get fixed by lubing those.

A spray of Rem Oil every so often.

I spray some dry-lube in it.  And, well, whatever oil gets splattered in there from the carrier.

On the rare occasion I inspect the buffer and spring while cleaning, I'll give the assembly some lube.
I do purposely lube it on the initial, overall lube of a new rifle.

Every one of Mine I do this with.

I have never lubed any of mine, never had any issues either. Just don't like the idea of dirt and grime getting attached to the oil inside the tube.

I dont "technically" lube the extension,  but i do wipe down the spring with a patch and clp every other cleaning or so

You have it wrong. If two surfaces touch and one or both of them move against one another then it should be lubed.

I put grease on the spring and buffer.

I only wipe the buffer and action spring down with an oily rag every once in awhile.

Static contact does not usually require oiling.

I put a few drops of Mobil 1 down in the tube every so often.  It's bound to help reduce wear and smooth the rearward/forward travel of the buffer/bolt carrier.

I run buffer tubes with dry lube coating inside. So no here.

Yes.

There are a few tricks up my sleeve I use to really smooth out the buffer tube and the spring and it doesn't involve spending $100 on a JP SCS

If someone oils their bolt carrier (IOW everyone) and tells you to keep the extension tube dry, they're only fooling themselves.

Dab some grease on a rag and run it down the tube a few times.

Only the back half of the BCG goes into the buffer tube. I usually do apply a thin layer of oil to the entire BCG with a toothbrush though, so some oil can transfer I suppose. But it's not the same as putting grease directly on your buffer spring or anything like that. I usually wipe the spring with a dry cloth, if it even gets touched at all. Dry lube (Teflon spray) is the only thing I apply directly to springs and trigger parts. I've seen too many clumps of gunk from when I was more enthusiastic about oiling.

me too.  I use moly grease, apply once and forget.  Light oil tends to splatter into the action. - CW
