I'm in the process of building another lower, and trying to decide on which caliber to go with. I've got 2 - 5.56 already so I want something different. It'll mostly be used for target shooting but I want something with a little thump behind it for hunting as well if I wanted to use it. Thanks in advance.

6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC

Consider the 300 blackout. It's more than just a short barreled subsonic round. The best thing about it is the "only" difference between it and a 5.56 build is the barrel. It makes for an economical conversion back to 5.56 if you don't like it.

6.8 SPC for sure.  Its real advantage is the ability to reach optimum performance in a 16" barrel, like the Blackout, but with more power and range.  My 16" rifles deliver about 2500 fps with 120 grain SST bullets and A2200 powder.  This is not a particularly hot load, short of where swipes on the case heads would show up. - CW

300 Blackout and 6.8 were the 2 I've been looking at most. I'm also stuck on wether it's easier and more cost effective to buy a complete upper in one of these or build my own, which Id really like to do to say I built the complete gun, rather than just building a lower from ground up.

Since i know a lot of people will make 6mm suggestions. 308WIN Easier to source ammunition or componets imo. Plenty of power and range, use a quality match barrel and work up a load.

It would really depend on the use or type of build.

300 BLK for a pistol or SBR...6.8 SPC for hunting but its pricey to shoot regularly.

For a cheap plinker that can easily double as a hunting rifle within 300 yards or so, don't rule out 7.62x39...its very economical to shoot a lot.

He listed target practice with more thump as criteria, .308 fits that bill well.

...as does 7.62x39, but a lot cheaper, and it uses the same AR15 platform.

My only advice before considering the 300 blackout is the ammo availability.  I made the mistake of building a blackout and it is nearly impossible to run to the store and pick up a few boxes to go plinking.  Around here, northern IN, the best you will come by will be Remington Premier match which are about 33 bucks a box.  Maybe it's easier to come by in other areas.  That's the one regret with this round that I have is that it's just hard to find.

Great choices particularly the 6.8 for hunting. The .277 bullet has one of the most efficient  BC's of any projectile around.

Well if he wants to "go plinking" a lot vs target practice, then I would agree 7.62x39 is a good caliber choice. It's easy to source, affordable and has a little more power than the 5.56. But if he did mean target practice vs plinking then I stand by the .308Win.

*edit* damn double post.

I agree for target shoot at distance, 300 yards+ the .308 is a better, but more costly option.

If economics is not a factor, then definitely go .308 (7.62x51).

I'm building a 6x6.8 at the moment, should fit the bill nicely if you reload.

I have a Grendel as well that I'd recommend.

I appreciate all the input from everyone. I do believe at this point I'm going to go ahead and build a 6.8. We reload so it'll be a little less painful than constantly buying factory ammo for it.

Having said that, does anyone have a recommendation on whose upper parts to buy for a 6.8? Thanks again everyone.

There is always the 6X45 option.  Uses the same components just different barrel.  Brass is cheap and your shooting the 6mm bullet.  Just another option.

Ive went back n forth with all ar options and since i reload ive decided to go 308, its available everywhere and most powders that you use for 223/556 will also work for 308, just makes sense for me, not everyone.

Target shooting or hunting, that would be my choices as well.  Although Id love to build an AR on a 6.5 Creedmore :)

I just bought a 6.8 barrel and bolt for my new build. Hopefully going to slay a deer with it later this year

My 6x45 and 6x6.8 get shot more then any of my other rifles , the 6x6.8 is a laser

One of my friends just went to the 7.62x40 WT. He is in the load testing stage now. Looks pretty good so far. He bought their built upper, pricey.

Check out Ozark Ordnance for 300 blackout if you don't reload. Very affordable.

I hear ya. I am in the process of dialing in my 30 HAR and it is only 120-150 FPS slower then the cartridge you have on the far right. That is a considerable amount of power from a regular AR platform with out the weight of an AR 10 size rifle.

Nally:  I highly recommend AR Performance for your 6.8 barrel and bolt.  Second choice is Wilson Combat.  16" barrel length is ideal for this cartridge, due to its high expansion ratio (relatively small case and large bore).  A lightweight barrel is best, IMO.  I prefer ASC and CPD brands for magazines, easy to load, durable and once you get the feed lips adjusted, utterly reliable.  good luck - CW

Big +1 on this, Mr. Beene makes some great suff. Make sure to pick up an ARP bolt too.

I have both an ARPerformance scout profile 16" barrel and a 16" Bison Armory scout profile barrel, the ARP barrel shoots the SSA 110gr. Sierra SP tactical loads better, so I would recommend the ARP barrel in 6.8.
I love the 6.8 spc, it has the punch of 7.62x39 and the range of 5.56, whats not to like?
