Hi all,

I've assembled several AR's from 100% receivers, but would like to now try out a 0%. I wanted to start with an 80% but those cost more than 100%'s . I've seen 0% lowers advertised as a simple square block of aluminum, and also as a forging very similar to an 80%. That forging style is the type I'm looking for. Looking for the best price I can get as it won't hurt as much if I muck it up and I plan on atleast getting 2 or 3. Poly or aluminum, does not matter as I'm using this as a learning/fun task.

Aero Precision does or used to sell a 0% for $25, but I can't find it on their new website.

I've seen a couple of the 80% Lower suppliers have raw forgings for sale.

Shouldn't he just be able to get a standard 7075-T6 aluminum block from any metal supplier?  I mean you should have to do is figure out the full outer dimension of the lower receiver, then add a little material to all sides.  Then program that into the CNC.  There isn't anything special about the material.

I don't' know what those dimensions would be off hand, but once you do, maybe try to source it locally.
- Looks like it needs to be about 1.5"w x 9"L x 5"T.  But please verify that.

It would actually be easier to start with a chunk of billet if you do not have fixtures for the forging.

If this is just about saving $20 or $30, forget it.  The receiver extension housing tap alone costs more than an 80% lower.   And if you don't have a good vertical mill with a full complement of tooling, forget it.  While you can finish an 80% with hand held power tools, a 0% requires basically full machine shop capabilities.

I do  have a small machine shop, and I have  built lowers from scratch (and whole guns), but if you do not have substantial equipment and experience, you'll end up with what many companies advertise their 0% forgings as: a paper weight.

Not trying to discourage you from trying if you have the capability, just want to make sure you understand what you're getting into.  It ain't something you can do with a drill press, router and Dremel.  Not even close.
