I got one of those e-mail sale flyers and it had this melonited carbine barrel for sale. It's a 1:9 twist with carbine length gas setup, M4 cuts and threaded for flash hider. Does it look like it's worth it for a shooter/plinker?

That's a smoking price.  If I was in the market for a plinker, I'd be all over it...

Good Lord! I'd jump on that... Sheesh, I may just get one to build a 16" upper. This would help a lot in building a sub-$500 AR. Sadly I doubt this deal will not last long enough for me to be in a position to pick on up at this pricing :(

Couldn't pass that up.  Picked up the limit: 2

I went and ordered one -- figured it won't hurt since I only have one carbine now and I do like shooting it.

Thank you.
I hope I didn't take on to big a task vs just buying a complete upper my first go around with an AR ever

Well I had to order two.  One for myself and one for my coworker.

Wonder if I can get a sub $450 build going...  As it is right now with what I can find, I can get a $594 build.  Probably cheaper if I wanted a standard stock, but I trust an MOE more.

If this build can get 3MOA at under $450 I would consider that a huge success.

It sure looks like it's made by the same company but this barrel is 1:9 twist that one sold by AIM is listed as 1:7 twist. Is DC Machine a good barrel maker?

They already show as out of stock also. I wouldn't have really wanted one in a 1:9 twist anyway. I like 1:8 twist better.

They are in stock.  The listing describes them as "overstock"....not out of stock.

The sale price is listed in red below the 139.  Use $5 flat rate shipping and the total is right at $75

http://www.redbarnarmory.com/mobile/product.aspx?ProductCode=rba16m419&404;http://www.redbarnarmory.com:80/RBA-16-M4-1-9-p/rba16m419.htm?mc_cid=1a703f58ef&mc_eid=b649414c6f

It says OVERSTOCK not out of stock.

Just below the add to cart button, it says Stock Status: In Stock.

It also says free shipping on orders of $99 or more.

It also says savings of $100.00 in reference to the sale price.

Where are you guys getting the prices wrong and that the item is out of stock?

I still don't know the specifics about the barrel but damn if that ain't some AWESOME customer service. Now my last worry is how this barrel will group once installed....

I got my barrel on Monday. It's nice with a jet black finish -- a bit shiny for me so I might have to use one of those fancy spray finishes on it. I'll wait to see how it shoots first.

glocksalot,
If you know the fellow that runs Red Barn how about putting in a request for a 300BLK barrel priced around the same as this carbine barrel.

Nice barrel...especially for the money!

Any one determine which gas block matches up with the dimples?

Mine came the other day too and had the individual netted sleeves on them and boxed with packing peanuts.  I agree the melonite coating is nice and dark but it will make for a "something different" build.

I may save one for a build I am planning for my daughter who just turned six so she may not see it for a few years.

I already have all the parts put aside which include an Aero prison pink upper and lower and a full Magpul pink furniture set so the rich black would go good with it.  I had planned to use a pencil barrel to save on some weight but will see.

Finally looked my barrel over today and noticed it looks like the inside is messed up there they drilled the gas port. I've not looked at many new barrels that close do I don't know if that's normal and if it will come out with a cleaning of firing it.

Switch your phone camera into macro mode, put a light source on the chamber end of the barrel and view the bore through the muzzle with your phone camera lens.  You may have to move the light source so it's angled slightly vs pointing directly down the barrel.  Take a photo and post it.

Also I'd run a patch or two down the bore after you take the above photo and see what you have on the patch as well as what the bore looks like.

Edit to add: QPQ stands for Quench-Polish-Quench as it relates to the melonite finish, essentially it's a double treatment vs a single with a polishing stage between to prep the surface for the second treatment bath.  There's a decent chance that a bit of polishing compound was left behind in the gas port during the polish stage.

I wanted to bring this back to the top because I am in the process of my piecing together my first build and came across this barrel.

What is everyone's thoughts on it? They also have a 1:7 twist chrome lined phosphate coated for 159 that I'm looking at, or for even just a little more I can jump up to a Yankee Hill barrel: http://www.redbarnarmory.com/YHM-47-T-5-56-Barrel-16inch-p/yhm47t.htm

I had my eyes set on the YH barrel because of price and I will be using a YH gas block... I would assume the two mate perfectly and anodizing color/finish matches.

Thoughts?
