Anyone know how durable/life is on some of the glow in the dark paint products on the market? I am building a Zombie Dissy with glow in the dark parts (Logo's and markings) and I am making a Parachord glow in the dark sling. Should be a interesting build. Won't be done in a long time but I am pricing stuff right now. I wanna start on it as soon as I finish my M16A4 clone build (which I am only missing a barrel and BCG on now).

Thanks guys! I know this is probably a weird/crazy build that many people are thinking is dumb but I thought it would be a cool thing to have in the safe. Def. not going to be my Go-2-Gun

I get the idea of "safe queens" or guns meant to be purely for discussion pieces or just plain fun. If my gun budget were much, *much* larger, I would probably have some too. However, it's not, so I don't. I view pretty much any gun I purchase as part of my SHTF arsenal, so to speak - something not only I, but my family as well, could utilize effectively in the unlikely (but possible) event that S does HTF. In that scenario, the glow in the dark paint would most probably last longer than you for obvious reasons.

Outside of that, it sounds like a cool idea. A quick Google search indicated that the various types of luminescent paint should last 10-20 years. I would guess those are the higher-end products, and I have no idea what the average life expectancy across the industry may be. Personally, I would probably be pleasantly surprised if it lasted 5-10 years, but again, I have no experience with it.

Sorry I can't help much.

I used Durabright on some pistol sights a couple of years ago and they still glow.

What part of a kicks and giggles rig is not clear? Take a reality check, how many of us have firearms that are never intended as a SHTF weapon. Why not build a kicks and giggles rifle with all kinds of non-tactical accessories if that is what the builder wants?

OP, now you need to see if you can beg, borrow, or steal from someone some of those Mag-Pul followers they had at SHOT a few years ago that glowed in the dark. They had green and blue and they did not glow for long, but they are fun to have.

Why do some people feel the need to offer their opinion when the OP asked simple question. It must be human nature for people to think their opinion matters.

And proof of this is the popularity of Face Book. Everyone thinks the world gives a rat's butt about their personal life.

By the way, years and years ago when night sights were much more expensive and hard to find for one's particular firearm, I used glow in the dark paint on the front sights of some of my hunting handguns. I did not have very good luck with it because it wore off quickly from rubbing the holster and needed to be recharged every few minutes. Of course today's paints may be much more durable and longer lasting.

That's more twitter than facebook, point made though.

On the original topic, I have glow paint on my 10/22's front post and it's held up to several years of trudging through the woods. I would imagine it would last for quite a while on a logo.

Yeah I been looking online at glow in the dark paint, and i was seeing what ones were people using on their night sights. Ill have keep reading a bit but I will post pics when I painted it, I might also have find some glow in the dark Magpul followers, those looked pretty BA. I am guessing though, that the life would be about 5yrs max if i am lucky,. idk how well the markings are going to show up though. Either really awesome or really shitty. I don't think there is going to be an in between.

As for the opinion, Its a fun project. Meant to be a cool fun plinking rifle, not a Larue or colt Iraq drugged war rifle. just something different I can make.

sounds like a fun project to me not sure if glow in the dark paint will show up well on black, but you could color fill the roll marks white then cover the white with the glow paint

That would be my suggestionion. Duracoat's GITD paint needs to go on over Duracoat White.

i think it will show a little, but i think it will show alot better if it's over white! just do a test sample with white and then without and see what you like the best but i think it will show a lot better over white though IMO

i've played with glow in the dark paint in art before and years later the gitd would still glow.

The thing is it usually needs light to recharge it.

The room and paintings would glow wonderfully for about an hour after you shut the lights off but after that almost nothing unless you turned the lights on for a bit.

Hope I'm not stepping in the wrong pile here BUT ... I use Glow-On phosphorescent paint on my gun sights. Well, some of them. Get it from http://www.glow-on.com/. Before I hit the sack I set out my Glock 27 on the night stand for a few minutes and put it back in the drawer. Any time I have taken it out to check, it is still glowing. Seems to work fine. The little bottle goes a loong way.

Just my opinion, hope its OK.

I've been using GlowInc's powders (works awesome mixed with epoxy) and paints for a few years now. Their V10 green is bright!

Went to the Glow Inc.site. Looks great. Until, that is, I got to the shipping. 1/2 oz of the bright green at $7.98 ( or something like that) was fine. The almost $12.00 shipping sucks. Only saw UPS shipping, went all over the site looking for other types of shipping but never saw any. I don't like paying more for shipping than the item I am buying. I'll stick with my Glow-On. The item costs more than Glow Inc. but the shipping was less, IIRC.
