I've been target shooting a custom 03A3 with an incredible trigger, and the rough feeling trigger, along with the trigger creep on my Spike's ST-15 were REALLY bothering me. So, last night, I tried this mod: http://www.geocities.com/molonlaberkba/triggerjob.html. I used Emery cloth/paper on a slab of glass to get a mirror finish on the sear surfaces, hammer face and the four bearing surfaces that touch the receiver. I cut and bent the springs as noted. The trigger pull took much less effort and the crunchy, rough trigger feeling totally disappeared. However, the overly long trigger creep was still there. The pull is much lighter and like silk now, but it's still a long crawl to get to the bang.

Tonight I finished this mod: http://www.junkyardgenius.com/firearms/ar-15/ar08.html My grip screw is 1/4-28 (fine) and the threads don't go all the way through the hole into the lower. I could only find 1/4-20 (course) set screws, so I used a 1/4-20 tap on the untapped hole, from the inside, tapping outward. I inserted a hex wrench from the outside and through the hole, put the hex screw on, then unscrew it back into the threads. This way I can dry-fire and make adjustments as needed, with the trigger group in place.

The JYGenius originally shows installing the set screw from the outside, then later shows making adjustments from the inside with the trigger group removed. He explained it one way, then showed it another. I opted for the way he explained it. I also had to remove some metal from the rear of the trigger using a Dremel, in order to install the safety as he shows. I performed all of the safety checks several times in different held positions, and beat on it with the hammer back, etc. Works like a charm.

In summary, if all goes well at the range in the morning, I will be VERY HAPPY with these mods.

+2 on the JP springs. Ditch the stock bent springs and spend the $10. I've done this mod, oh like five times now...wonderful.

Thanks for the spring info. I will definately look into that. Just got back from the range and the trigger mods worked as advertised! A couple of the gun gurus there tried it out and remarked - nice job and what trigger? Two hundred and fifty rounds between me and the sons with absolutely no problems, other than getting the gun back for me to shoot. I like it!

The Brownell's, J&L RESEARCH trigger screw still has me confused. Is the larger grip screw hollow all the way through, and threaded to allow the thinner trigger adjustment screw to be adjusted through the grip screw from the grip side? I would think that would be the case, or it would be a pain to adjust from inside the lower. Cool, but already have that well covered.

Anyway, I am very pleased with my $1.52 mods, for the small stainless set screw and Emery paper. I do want to try those springs though.

Here's a silly question: what grit emery paper did you use? Thank you.

Be careful using emery cloth and use only very fine grit. The case hardening on AR trigger, sear and disconnector is thin and it's not difficult to go through it exposing the soft steel underneath. The trigger will then wear pretty quickly and could produce an unsafe condition.

If you are not real comfortable doing this kind of work yourself, check out Bill Springfield. He does a very nice trigger job on your parts, he's fast and very reasonable.
