Ok, first let me set some parameters...
It needs to use no more than two CR123 batteries. Anything much larger than that is "big" IMHO. Reasonably priced, like under $300, if that's possible. Any light you recommend needs to have been used by you at that range. I can look at youtube videos just like anyone else can. I want to hear what you have used and can verify that the beam is bright and clear enough for real world PID at those distances. And finally, Surefire makes plenty of lights that punch out that far but I'm really interested to know what else is available. Currently I'm using WMLs and 200 lumens doesn't quite do the trick. It's good out too 100 or maybe 200 but that's about it... Let me know what you have.

You're asking a lot from a light using 2 123 batteries. You can probably find numerous lights using 2 18650's that will "throw" that far. I have quite a few lights that will "throw" WAY past that distance but nothing small. |

A member on another post suggested the Armytek Predator. It will use 2 CR123'S or 1 18650. Supposedly will throw past 400yds. It's a little over 6" in length.
Candlepower forums will get you better answers and more broad range of light selection... I rarely see a suggestion other than, Surefire and streamlight on here. |

Ive had Armytek's Predator and Viking flashlights for about 3+ years now. The Predator has a 5 degree spot, very good distance. Viking is 10 degree and use it for work. I can't say for sure what the distance is on the Predator, but its far. I'll see if I can range 400 yards in the outskirts of where I live and get a picture.
Both have good build quality, and very user programmable. |

Well you also have to define "throw out to 400yds". What lux value @ 400y?
My Surefire M97 with a Malkoff drop-in has pretty good throw. Runs on 3 CR123A. Heavy. 
My Olight M3X runs on 2 18650s and is rated at almost a kilometer of throw w/ 1200lm. Pretty big for a weaponlight though, but not impossible I guess. |

So, I ended up buying the Armtek Predator for $85....
WOW. It's exactly what I was looking for. I've only been able to try it out at about 100 yards, but I'm VERY impressed. If it holds up to abuse well, I think it's a solid winner. Thanks for the advice! |

I'd like to know under what conditions a civilian is going to make a night time shoot / no shoot decision at 400+ yards.

I have to second the P3X Fury suggestion. My wife just got me one of those lights recently and it's awesome for an off-the-shelf option from a popular and proven manufacturer. I'd actually been looking at a TLR-1 HPL for coyote hunting recently, and now I'd love run it side by side with the P3X to compare the two. |

My 475 lumen light was "meh" on the 400 yard steel so I'm looking for a light with a little more ass. And I found it. The Armtek Predator is pretty strong. Unless you goal is to just shoot at an inanimate object at distance in the dark with a flashlight, in practical use, wouldn't night vision be the proper choice for engaging a target at 400yds? At that distance your only going to have an idea where your target is. Your going to be scanning with your white light first to even locate it before you can get the target in your field of view. I'm just asking to know what your goal is besides range use.
