Just finished putting the wife's new range toy together w/a MOE handguard & vfg.
I'm now looking at a lightweight & inexpensive light setup for it and am thinking the Surefire G2X Tactical in an offset mount where the thumb of her support hand can easily reach it while chicken-choking the vfg.
Any offset mount suggestions? Thx!...

G2X is a great choice.  For mounts you have IWC, Magpul and Arson Machine.  I don't think anyone else really makes a direct mount to MOE handguards.  There are few more options if it's the new M-LOK Handguards.  The cheapest mount is the Magpul (both M-LOK and old style MOE), but IMO they look like crap.

I have used the Arson Machine mounts on the Old MOE handguards then switched to their M-LOK version when the wife wanted the MOE SL guards on her rifle.  Both work great with the VFG and with her small hands she has not problem.  But she is using the VFG as more of a hand stop than a VFG.  I do like the IWC MOE mount as it puts the light further forward but I am not sure if it will work with M-LOK.  Arisaka Defense makes an Inline light mount for the M-LOK but doesn't look like the make an offset one.  I know there are a couple more M-LOK mounts but my tired brain is failing me right now.  But any of the above options would probably get it done for you and all are under $50ea.

Thx, but I was thinking of using a MOE rail on the right side with an offset mount to drop the light down to the appx 4-5 o'clock position where her thumb could easily reach it.

If you don't want offset, GG&G makes a G2 mounting ring: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GSRSLM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=8BRCIKL3NP0X&coliid=I3EYJXQCFMGN2H

The Arson one can be flipped to run on the low side.  I will go grab the wifle and snap a pic.

If you are going to mount a rail section to the handguard, the Elzetta ZRX may work for you.  I would consider it mid range for weight because it is mostly polymer with steel hardware and rings.  It will put the light right about where you want it.  The only issue is that it may stick too far out to the right for your liking.  There is another mount just like the Elzetta but made mostly from polymer (mounting rings are polymer), I just can't remember the name at the moment.  It should be lighter.

You can use the Magpul extended rail to get the light a little further toward, this is what I did.

This is a CAA 5 position light mount on a magpul rail.

I'm able to grip the foregrip (More like a handstop than VFG is how I hold it) and hit the light switch with my thumb. (If your right handed shooter it'll have to go on the other side I'm a lefty)

the light is a streamlight poly tac LED has hi/low and strobe functions.

39.99 for light, and 22.50 for light mount

Not real sure, Not to much of a difference for me to notice......(Goes off to weigh carbine with and without)

update.

Carbine without light or mount weight 7.6 pounds,
with light mount with no light 7.8,
with light mount flashlight 8.1.

Standing on a bathroom scale, not exactly precise but best I can do.

I recently asked the same question. After weighing all the different suggestions, this is what I went with. I can easily actuate the tail cap comfortably with my left thumb.

- G2X Tactical - Desert Tan: $63.00 Shipped
- MOE 11 O'Clock Left Side Scout Mount: $7.85 Shipped
- MOE V-Block & Rings: $17.95 Shipped

Total to-my-door: $88.80

That's nothing more than a Weaver scope ring. $10 a pair at walmart, or $2 each out of the junk bin at any decent pawn shop.

I recently acquired an AR, and wanted a good Surefire G2 mount for the MOE handguard. A few recommended the IWC mount, and I'm glad I went with it.

Yep, IWC is the way to go on standard MOE hg. Simple, light, and solid. Recently installed mine w/ SF G2X tac light.

Thx for all the great suggestions that completely miss the objective of placing the light at the 5 o'clock position.

Wouldn't running the IWC mount on the rhs put it in the 4-5:00 position?  I could mount it there and snap a pic if you would like.

The owc, can position the light at 11, 1, 5 and 6.

The arm as beleved on both sides. So it can be flipped.

Biggest issue with low mount like that is the barrel shadow. You DONOT want to shadow your target. Hence why lights are mount as high and far foward as possible.

Grab the AR and your flashlight. Hold it in those positions and watch the barrel shadow.

I assume you meant 7?

I agree with shadowing. Not a deal breaker (depending on setup), but most prefer them high and forward.

That had occurred to me, but so far all the pics/suggestions have been for appx 10 o'clock.
If it's not a big inconvenience, I'd love seeing the IWC at the 4-5 position, I'm curious if the slight angle on the top hand guard would angle the light out too far for easy access. Thx!...

Here ya go.

Here is a pic of the shadow created @ about 8' from wall.

Seems to be in more of a 4:00 position. Seems like it would be an easy reach with a VFG, at least for me.

Hope this helps ya.

I bought it used off the EE, but I am fairly certain it's this one:

http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/product/smc-light-mount-1-00/

It only specifies the 11 and 1 position,  but obviously it works in the lower positions as well.
