Howdy all,

Starting out in the world of private AR-15 ownership. Couldn't find this in the search...what cleaning kits are recommended for AR-15 servicing? Which lube and solvent?

It seems Hoppes, Otis, Gunslick, are some of the most bought on Amazon but average in reviews. Just don't know which to chose...

Thank you for reading and replying.

A lot of people like the Boresnake. I have one, but don't use it much. The string feels too easy to break.

I usually use an OTIS cable for the bore, and a chamber brush on a USGI rod.
This is like O. Henry and Alanis Morissette had a baby and named it this exact situation.

Otis cleaning kit. Very compact and flexible. No rods. I use the same kit for my 9mm Sig P226 and my KAC SR15. My brother in law used it on his .40, and my brother used it on his .357. All cool.
M-Pro 7 for cleaning, SLIP 2000 EWL for lube.

Find a low odor/no odor solvent for common use. I can clean with M-Pro 7 in the living room while my wife is watching TV. Hoppe's works but it stinks and will give you a buzz in enclosed spaces.

Throw some tight packed Q-tips in the kit, along with an old toothbrush. They will both come in handy.

Network,

I started with a cleaning kit in 1975 and it lasted for about 2 months then I stared collecting my stuff in a beat up Plano tackle box, that old box has evolved to this today:

This box contains all of the stuff I need to repair, clean and disassemble my weapons....The picture with the three smaller boxes has my cleaning jags and brushes....I purchased identical size boxes that I can swap out and carry small parts...

The good thing about this kit is a I can pull out just what I think I will need for a quick range trip and not bring the entire box....

As far as oils and lubricants, I have used just about everything out there over the years...Started out with Hoppes, which was great, then went to Gunslick, Tetra, TW25, MilComm...you name it.

What I have found to work the best is Slip 2000 for cleaning and lubricating, their EWG is great. I also use Wilson Combat products, been doing so for about 12 years, mainly on my pistols....this is really good stuff.

For the exterior, I spray each gun down with BC Barricade, real good stuff

I am not saying you need this set up, but this kit above works for me for all of the shooting I do....remember a cleaning kit is more than that, you need the tools to work on them.

I hope this helps....good luck
