1. Keeps foam from getting all torn up
2. Acts as a moisture barrier

I am glad someone finally added to this thread.  I just recently found it, and I have been admiring the work that all of you have done.  After a couple weeks of going back and forth, I purchased a Pelican Storm im2700, with plans to hold my 16 inch carbine on top with 4 pistols below.  I am just getting started with cutting, but so far things are going well.  Once all is done, I will spray the foam with the rubberized treatment, and hopefully have one kick ass range container.

PS- good to see someone from South Carolina see the light! Go DAWGS

My first attempt at my Pelican layout...

I will need a new foam kit once all the back-ordered items come in...

The silica kit will stay in, but the golf ball launcher will likely be stored elsewhere...

For the time being, there is room for the fore grip (yet to be installed, along with quad-rail), and a low profile optics system (to be determined)...

...and a couple more mags...

The M9 bayonet is the latest acquisition...

A few pix of some Shure microphone cases that I re-purposed with some mattress topper foam:

For my Glock Model 23 Gen2 -

For my Glock Model 27 Gen4 -

For some of my armorer's tools -

...and one pic of my pair...

That's some pretty nice looking setups.  I completely understand where you're coming from on changing around things after the foam is cut.  I too am having some second thoughts on arrangements as I have a few accessories I would like to acquire.  Oh well, I guess I could always glue back in some foam...

The foam can be a pain in the ass, especially when taking the case to a range. I have ended up just tossing the foam and using my soft cases.

I can fit 2 double rifle cases and a single one. The 36" Sig Sauer bags are doubles and the one on top is an older VooDoo single 42" bag that fits perfectly. It will hold all 5 rifles as long as I don't load the mag pouches.

For me, this made a lot more sense than having a ton of foam all over the place. You can order the cases without foam from Amazon/Optics Planet as well.

We have 2 of these cases and they are awesome for trips both by air or car. They add a bit of weight (28 lbs) but I think its worth it.

There are Pelican cases like the 1700, 1750 ect that will work with just one of the bags as well.

I have seen this done with a lot of sniper rigs.  Just put the drag bag inside the Pelican which is what I am going to do if I ever change the current configuration enough to require new foam.

I'm debating on picking up another 1720 just for that long bag and my 18" hunting rig.

Not to continue to beat the everloving crap out of this very dead horse... but the "plasti-dip" product that you guys are talking about is not the stuff i used to spray with and its not the stuff that was originally recommended for use by other pelican owners.

the product I used i picked up from home depot, I believe it was the 3m brand but they all go by the name of rubberized undercoat or similar. the can itself is somehwere out in the shed and since i just walked in from a 4 mile run in 20f im not leaving this bed unless I fall asleep or die, so ill chase it down and update the thread tommorow.

the other can I have that I also believe i used for some finishing touches that appears to be the same stuff is made by dupli color and is called rubberized undercoat, i found it in my local auto supply shop for a whole 4 bucks a can so obvioulsy I picked up like 6 since they tend to go fast.

I really do think that the rubberized aersol style spray is a better idea, ive messed with the plasti dip before and its not what you are looking for trust me... It coats way to thick, is more of a plastic than a rubber, doesnt mate well to the surface etc.  that is of course if they are actually different products, the plasti dip rattle can might be the same and the plasti dip paint can might be completely different. Ill check the msds or the contents tommrorw.

HEY, I TOTALLY THINK MY POST IS SUPER IMPORTANT SO I'M GOING TO USE A REALLY LARGE FONT!!!!  WAIT, THE GUY ABOVE ME DID IT, SO NOW I'LL HAVE TO USE COLORS, ANIMATIONS, AND LOTS OF EXCLAIMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you use your gun case for arm workouts too huh?

I can't really say anything. Just my AR case with the gun, mags, and cleaning kit weighs 54 pounds. No telling what my shotgun case weighs because I have my 1187 and my 870 with extras plus ammo in it. I know it sucks like hell putting back on the shelf in the closet when done using it and I know it's more than my AR case cause it's nothing putting it back up there.

it sure is heavy as hell. I have yet to purchase optics, bipod, forearm vert. grip and so on. Glad it has wheels. being 5'7" 160 lbs. it's more than just an arm workout gadget and i'm thinking about adding an AK-47 beneath my SIG 516 . I don't put it on the shelf thank goodness for that. It can easily be seen by my kids so I have a custom made hiding place lol. Heard too many accidental shootings by young kids and i'm not taking any chances. I have everything locked up in the case. As far as ammo, I only keep enough on my mags so no extra ammo laying around...Peace...

Thanks for posting those pictures.  Just picked up a 1740 w/o foam from opticsplanet and paid 243 shipped using their 10% coupon.

Egg crate is the way to go. I have a cut out section for my Boyt for my 300 WinMag, and my carbine, but I can't stand it because I rarely end up with both of those guns at the same time.

I like my 1750 with one of the solid foams removed and an egg crate from my old case on one side which works out great for flexibility.

I don't know how you manage to fit (3) rifle cases in your 1740.  Even with just two, I'm slightly above the lip of the bottom portion of the container.

I completely forgot about this thread, this thread is the reason I finally went with a pelican over some other options. I ended up getting part of my case finished then had to put things on hold due to craziness at work but back to working on it now. The P22 is sold and I got a couple new toys, so need to do some re-configuring and also cut slots for accessories like mags and what not, the hot-wire cutting method works awesome!  Hopefully I can rework things without having to buy new foam.

My 3 loaded will stick about 4 inches out the top until I close the lid and everything squeezes in tight. If I have larger scopes I tend to keep them separate.

Does this count?  It is a Pelican Storm iM3100.  Don't know which brand to go off since one company bought the other but it says Pelican other wise.  This one is setup with a custom soft case inside by mobile armory.  I like it but I think my next Pelican case will be with foam cut outs.

Guys, just a PSA, don't put stickers on cases you fly with. It draws unwanted attention and an increased chance for sticky fingers. I know they are cool to show off the shut you bought, but they are better left on range boxes and safes at home.

Sound advice but traveling with a long Pelican case already screams "I have a gun" or expensive equipment worth stealing. A few stickers aren't going to make a bit of difference in that regard, especially when they're mostly recognizable only by those in the firearms community. Besides, if it weren't for noticing his sticker plastered pelican passing me by in the airport I wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet Kyle Lamb.

The other side of the argument is if your going to be traveling with an obvious firearm - which a large Pelican case usually is - You might as well be as overt as possible, the more attention drawn to it the more eyes to hopefully avert a thief from spending quality alone time with your weapon case.

Cases look amazing guys. I actually have a bit of a dilemma that I need some advice on.  I ordered my first rifle last week and was told it did not come with a case. After doing a little research I determined Pelicans made some of the finest cases, so I went out and dropped $200 on a 1720. Absolutely beautiful case! However, when I went to pickup my AR today I open the box and boom there's a Rainier case. Now don't get me wrong this Rainier case couldn't even be the bastard stepchild of the 1720, but it is good enough for getting my AR from point A to B. Also, I don't ever really seeing myself traveling with my rifle, so I'm tempted to return the case and put that money towards some Troy iron sights. Does this sound like a good idea or is the Pelican something definitely worth having?

However, when I went to pickup my AR today I open the box and boom there's a Rainier case. Now don't get me wrong this Rainier case couldn't even be the bastard stepchild of the 1720, but it is good enough for getting my AR from point A to B. Also, I don't ever really seeing myself traveling with my rifle, so I'm tempted to return the case and put that money towards some Troy iron sights. Does this sound like a good idea or is the Pelican something definitely worth having?

My personal opinion is pull the foam out of the Pelican and purchase a soft bag for your AR.  Then you have the Pelican to put the soft bag in if you need the extra protection.  If you don't need the extra protection, just carry the rifle in the soft bag.  The Pelican also provides you a good container to lock a gun in if you have the need.  I know it is no gun safe, but it will keep kids out.  A 1750 can carry two SBRs in soft bags if packed correctly.  OR as some have pictured here, the Pelican can give you one container to take your rifle and pistol, or shotgun to the range in.  Makes it a little easier than carrying several cases.

Who all makes bags that are made to fit in the cases besides the pelican bags that cost as much or more than the cases?

Im gonna go look at rifle bags tomorrow and see if they fit the same i guess.

Some updated shots.

My first pelican case, a 1750 home to my lmt mww, savage .308, Springfield TRP, and some mags

Another 1750, found this one on craigslist for 100 bucks, in excellent condition.  Fits a 42" Voodoo double rifle bag easily.

In the middle is a 1660 I just picked up this weekend for 120 and cleaned up with some armorall.  Its going to be the battle box, chaos chest, thunder trunk, etc.. to hold my PC, war belt, 2 carbines, 2 pistols, ammo, ifak, and imitation crab meat.  Going to order a custom molle lid organizer from Vel Tye like the one pictured below which I found online.  Pictured next to cart for size comparison.

Not pictured: A 1650 I have no idea what to use for yet, but its brand new and I got it for free.  Various 1400 sized cases I use to store loaded pmags and for pistol cases.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to post opinions and especially pictures of their setups. It is truly appreciated by us doing research on how to get the best setup for our gear.

Yesterday I ordered one of these direct from I-Shot: SERT TCC 42" Rifle Case

And one of these from MidwayUSA: Pelican Storm iM3200

The Pelican Storm comes with foam that I can use if I want, but I'll be mainly be using it for airline travel along with the soft case for use at my destination.

I went with the SERT partly due to the extra rigidity offered by the plastic insert, but mainly the PALS webbing in the outer pocket.

It was a close call between the SERT and the LaRue M.O.A.B. but I thought that even though the SERT's outer pocket is smaller than the full-width inner storage on the M.O.A.B., I'd prefer the flexibility of adding my own pockets and pouches. I'll generally have an extra range bag with me anyhow for eyes/ears/other gubbins.

All my expensive gear travels and is stored in Pelican cases ONLY.

I do not travel with long gun cases, I break the firearms down and put them in shorter, less attention grabbing cases.

NO STICKERS - except for some labeled " Medical Wast Handling Materials "   <--------- nobody gonna touch that!

I used to fit my AR, a couple pistols and assorted mags in a square Pelican 1600. It makes it look like there is equipment, but doesn't scream out firearm

This was asked a few pages back but i didnt see it answered. Where can I find the egg crate foam to fit my Pelican 1750?

ETA: I did some research and found a place that sells foam. http://www.foambymail.com/ECF/eggcrate-charcoal-firm-foam.html

They do custom sizes, i emailed them with the dimensions used by these guys: http://www.foamerica.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AFP1755-CONV
I'm not sure why they are trying to sell a couple pieces of foam for more than $126, that seems insane. Foam by mail is a lot cheaper, we'll see how they do the custom size requests.

you could take a 17 series pelican or any of these style cases and put them right up next to a clear acryllic case with a big EBR inside and the two cases would attract the exact same amonut of attnetion by those who are looking to get their filthy hands on your rifle.   These things announce gun to literally everybody, its not even worth trying to hide it if your gonna go with this type of outer case. Just secure the hell out of it and you shoudl be fine
