i came up with a varoation on this one while i was in iraq, im not gonna get into mine, but lemme suggest that yall use tubular 1 inch webbing, it works alot better than the regular webbing.
its a lil harder to find, but tubular webbing doesnt cut into your body or snag on equipment quite as much. |
|
yes. that picture was probably set up just for a photo. as is, it would just pull apart- or at least the male end when pulled will unloop the webbing and come right off... |

|
tacked for when I get home from FLW and for when I get deployed.
Good stuff. |

A quick note on webbing: the dye in it can bleed out when wet, so it is best to wash it first before using. Just throw it in the washer and run it through a cycle or two. You will note that the water that comes out will be the color of the webbing. A friend found out about this when her webbing got wet, and permanently stained an expensive goretex jacket. I use webbing all the time for climbing slings, and now always wash before using.

I just made one. Looks right, but im still curious what is the purpose of the 2nd buckle ? I dont see how it is used

Tag, and for everyone else's benefit, found the best price so far at REI online. About $6.50 per sling if you average it out and pick up in the store to save shipping.
Buying for one sling and having it shipped to you will still be under $13.50 |

I put mine together while pulling all night security at a gunshow.......

anybody know where I can get a Hk style hook, that latches on to the eye near the ghost sight, for this type of sling? I need to build a sling for my G3
Thanks |

OK. I wish all the posts about using a thicker nylon webbing were up before I ordered. The stuff I got from REI IS WAAAAYYYY TOOOO SOFT!!!!! I put it together anyway and it's just ok, because of the webbing. Other then that it looks fine. Thanks for the "How to." Now I must find the right stuff!! |

ggllggll,
Thanks for the original post! I have no need of more slings at the moment, but I appreciate you sharing. |
|
Too late, I already made a 3-point quick detachable sling with $15 in my pocket and a trip to Any Mountain
|
|
try it out with that webbing for awhile, I saw the same stuff at REI today, it's basically Seatbelt webbing. TimW's Frankensling uses that same material. |

ok, I'm getting a chuckle - I'm assembling my slings right now following this post. Went to REI this morning - I'm a card-carrying member of that hippie collective - the piece of slack that helped me out at the store (in Los Angeles) did his job well, attempting to steer me to pre-assembled strapping products, but I told him was was working up a custom item and needed the parts. While he was making casual conversation, he inquired what for - I almost laughed out loud, then thought of a cover story, then decided to just rub his nose in it like the I am. Told him, and he visibly slumped. His two cohorts at the counter had no idea as I was cashed out.
Doubtless he breathlessly told them after I left, and somewhere along the way I'll be getting a 'membership revoked' letter from them. |
|
I'm also a member, I buy their stuff so I might as well get the check every April and the discounts. I get them tweaked all the time when I'm buying stuff because I say "I'm going to be using this during my Deer hunt," or "I need these boots to be tough and provide a lot of support because when I'm out quail hunting...". You are right, you can see the spirit just run right out of them. It's a hoot. |

I had the Same Problem and had to Improvise And Adapted.
Replaced the 5" with 12" of nylon web. I Placed a Slider after the looping the male, in before the female and loop it through the female back through the slider to lock it in after the female. Sort of like making it a Female Belt Buckle with a slider Lock. I loop both nylon web twice. This the closest picture of what I did. I placed a slide lock in between the Male and Female. As for the tension problem I just extended the length of the nylon. Hope it helps. I also have a question about this picture: Shouldn't the nylon web go thru both the front and back ends of the slider ? This sling is great! and easy to make too. The longest part for me was getting all the materials. Ace hardware was out of the black 1.5" webbing and 1" slide locks. I found the 1" slide locks at a local outfitter store and went back to Ace later and bought blue nylon 1.5" webbing after learning that I can simply dye it to black.
Assembly was much easier than I thought it was gonna be. Now I just have to get used to it. |
|
If you find a way to dye nylon let me know. I've got a pair of boots with black nylon sides I've been trying to figure out how to dye them green for the longest time. I even tried to bleach the black out...no avail.
Glad you like the sling! Matt

Back in the olden days, we were told "no jungle boots" so we used leather dye on the uppers to turn them black, we rarely got questioned... Now black to green will probably be a lot harder.
