Tried to back order at that price, and it went to $394 before shipping during check out, but I figured that's still a good deal. Man, I'm still torn. This will be my first AR optic and was considering the vortex SE 1-8 with mount for $420 shipped, however, I know the image quality isn't going to be there. Oh, and that reticle is goofy looking.
This steiner appears to have great glass with a nice simple reticle and DL illumination, the downside is 4x. |

Initial opinion (not mounted on rifle yet) is the glass is really nice. Eye box is decent. It's no red dot but it looks like it will work well. Dot is bright but it's raining here so I can't tell if it is daylight bright. It is a bit heavy at 17oz. Knobs work good enough. Maybe a little mushy but I plan to set and forget. I don't get the need for 1-8. In my opinion, we are asking too much out of that set up. Especially on "budget" optics. Glass and overall quality has to suffer going 1-8 and in the $400 range. How far will you be shooting? I'm going to be at 200 yards or less most of the time. So 1-4 is good for me. Maybe compromise with the new PA gen 3 1-6 with the acss reticle. I think the acss is a fantastic reticle. That scope is only 15.5 oz. Reports say the glass isn't horrible. I'm thinking about getting one to try. Or get the Steiner. I'm happy with it just out of the box. Time / usage will determine if I like it long term. Others that have used it seem to be happy with it. Choosing optics sucks, especially when there isn't anywhere around to see them in person. It took me 2 months to decide to go with the Steiner. . |

Thanks for chiming in guys. The vortex is definitely out based primarily on that reticle.
I forget about the PA Gen iii 1-6 and I like the ranging capability, so maybe. My primary shooting is <125y and my goal is to have something to quickly mow down targets within 50 yards and still have the ability to hit small objects easily around 100 yards. My range is maxed at 200. Quoted:

I bought a P4Xi yesterday for a new rifle. It was between the RT-6 from Burris, the Burris MTAC 1.5-6x42 and this. The MTAC with the 42mm lens might have killed it, but the P4XI might handle better and with the Steiner name an expectation of some reasonably decent quality glass is my hope. With Steiner I don't have to play games and dance around to target- AKA using the comparable MTAC range an IPSC center ring and then hold 200, range a target bracket to bracket on the center scale and hold 300. The P4XI has the no-nonsense 19" stadia lines- hold, fire- combat effective.
Every carbine optic should have a rapid range/BDC reticle. I didn't want to grab an ACOG because the mounts and adjustments in my military experience were just not as durable as conventional ring mounts and conventional scope adjustments. The TA31F reticle is bad ass. It would be cool if Trijicon offered a 1-6 FFP with that reticle in a conventional scope with conventional mount compatibility at a price of sub $1100. The major problem with scopes in this category is that quality can be so hit and miss. You could spend $500 on something like the Leupold VXR patrol, or $399 on some lesser known entity and it could be total garbage and a complete waste of money. The VXR patrol, unlike the overpriced Mark 6, has a reticle that is to me value-less- almost like Leupold couldn't give you what Steiner is giving you here for that price because they feel some need to deprive the customer of that value. The Mark-6 CQBSS has the CMR-W which is great, but you have to pay $2200 to get it which seems like a price that is $1000 higher than it should be, given the market competitors. I used to be a strictly Leupold Customer- They used to make good stuff for affordable prices, but I just don't see the value there with the huge rift between the Budget VXR and the Mark 6's which I see as really optics that should be in the Mark 4 lineup and should be priced like Mark 4 scopes. The Mark 4 line is aging, the Mark 8's should be priced like the Mark 6's, Mark 6's should be priced like Mark 4's (that way the customer looks at the competition and says, "I'll take a Leupold"). When I look at Mark 6's and 8's I think why not buy an S&B? And maybe the military did too, the CSASS rifles appeared to be sporting S&B's. |

Got the scope- it came with the free power change ring, and was sold under the mount promo. The glass is probably Leupold MK4 quality. The reticle illumination is very bright. Nice off positions, the fast focus eyepiece is a nice touch.
Pretty happy with it. I like the capped turrets- that way there is some confidence nothing slipped. The magnification at 4 is a little light, but I think I'd put it up against or probably take it over a MKIV M2 SPR 1.5-5. The reticle should be really fast to use. very functional. I put the Vortex covers on it. I'll have to zip tie those to the tube, the rubber is too soft to stay put when the caps are actuated. |

How do you like the illumination knob? Mine is very mushy and it's easy to over rotate and go back to an off setting because there isn't a strong distinct click between them. That's my only real complaint so far. . |

Out of curiosity, are you able to re-zero the turrets on the P4Xi? I hope to get one soon, been waiting on sales and waiting for July4th sales was a bust for this optic. The turrets do not seem like they should be loosened.

The vx6/mk6 are really the only 1-6's that weigh the same or less and have quality glass.I know pa/vortex both have their budget 1-6's but they aren't in the same league clarity wise and the closest comparable 1-6 is the vx6 at almost 3x the cost. Ive been through the nf 1-4/accupower 1-4/swfa 1-4/pstgenII 1-6/RAZOR 1-6/bushnell elite 1-6 and so far the steiner is the best compromise of cost/weight/quality that ive used. The new vx6hd with a cm-r reticle is probably going to be the real all around winner when it comes to the total package 1-6 market.I know the mk6 might be a favorite for a lot of people but the finicky illumination/eyebox are enough to keep me away. and no the turrets cannot be reset to zero.
