What would your choice be if you were limited to a single optic for your AR?

My experience isnt comprehensive, but the vortex razor HD II was worth the money over my ACOG.

Yea and if you wanted a decent red dot, and a magnified optic you would have about as much money in two optics as the one Razor HD II. The dot doesn't float around like a red dot but you can still use it like one with both eyes open.

I had written off the razor 1-6 for being too pricey and to heavy, but it's a lot of scope for the money and very close to a do it all optic.  Burris xtr ii is pretty nice as well and a lot cheaper and still get great illumination.  Interested to see if the tr25 1-6 will challenge the razor.

ACOG. 3.5x32 with the fiberoptic chevron reticle
Hands down.

Great optic, tough as all fuck, good low light visibility, and it doesn't need a battery whatsoever. It takes some getting used to for CQB, but it's completely doable. I trusted one with my life for 2+years in the desert. I cried a little bit on the inside when we turned them in. If I had $1300 to spend on one I would without a second thought.

Aimpoint or Eotech ... put the savings to another use.

My AR15s are defensive rifles; I don't need magnification.

Nightforce SHV 5-20x56 MOAR.

No frills nice scope for under $1100.

I can do the BAC pretty good and lots of time shooting NTCH allows me to use a TA31 ACOG pretty effectively in any situation out to 300M or so.

There are better optics, but an ACOG in the right hands is very viable for a lot of stuff.

If we are talking ARs I prefer ruggedness and lighter weight in optics for the most part. That's why I am partial to the H1,T1,T2 platform primarily. For a rugged lighter weight magnified optic give me a 4x Acog. If forced to choose one optic for end of times I could combine the attributes of each and live with a TA-44 Acog and probably would. I have two of these and one each of the former.

Wow, I am very surprised with all the ta31 love!  I'm actually considering a ta31 ecos, vortex viper 1-6 and elcan 1-4.  Anyone care to expand why even with so many nice variables why they still would choose to get a ta31 as their do it all optic?  Not knocking acogs at all, I love them and will most likely get one.

Yeah, all the TA31 love is kinda shocking.  I love them too, but BAC doesn't work for me--I'm two feet of at 15Y.
Transitions from 25-100Y are super slow.

I'd probably go with a Leupy, Nightforce or USOptics 1-4X in a Bobro Mount.

No batteries, reasonable weight for its capabilities, target ID is extremely important which 1X optics lack in, etc. ACOGs are pretty much bombproof.

TA-33 green horseshoe

Unless of course in our discussion a T-2 & Eotech magnifier somehow qualify as only one optic
then I'd take them instead of the TA-33

For 1500?

I'd get a ACOG TA31 fixed power 4x.

However, after experiencing with Elcan and their SpecterDR, I would probably say look into the SpecterOS4x model which is like the DR model but fixed 4x powered and for half the cost:

I am really hoping the Browe BCO's I ordered will be the optic for me when they arrive.

If not probably the TA33 would be my choice.  Shot with both eyes open it is fast and you can easily put flip caps on it.  I had a TA11 but it was really, really heavy.

In have learned I don't like 1-X scopes.

This.  Use both extensively and the Vortex HD is the best AR scope out there IMO.

I'd really like one of those 1-4 or 6 illuminated scopes.

Probably have to look at everyone's because I don't know which is the best reticle/durable of the available products (or how much they cost).

I really like Primary Arms's new reticle they have on their 1-6x.  Not sure about the scope itself, but I like the more close range oriented portions (because I'd be using magnification less often IMHO) of the reticle.  Really makes it a better scope for someone who only sometimes wants magnification, rather than wants to use it in a pinch at close range. (but doesn't want to deal with the whole red-dot + magnifier issue).

Out of everything I've used in that price range, ACOG. Besides that would just be EOTech/Aimpoint

For the price perhaps, otherwise it's middle of the pack when compared to the premium products.

This.  Good at its price point, but not a Kahles K16i by any means.

I don't have a Razor HD II, but given my experience with the MTAC 1.5-6x and issued ACOG's, I would take the Razor HD II over the ACOG.

If this was for a bolt or long range rifle I would get one of the Bushnell Extreme Tactical XRS 4.5-30x50's from Natchez for $950. Great deal for a normally $1600+ optic. 10 mil turrets, FFP and zero stops for under $1,000!

Here's the link in case anyone wants one before they sell out: http://www.natchezss.com/4-5-30-x50-xrs-flat-dark-earth.html

Good ol leupold mk4 ill 1.5-5 spr reticle as a "do all". If strictly for a 556 ar I would choose the cmr2 reticle.
