I would love an ACOG but I would be saving forever. I am planning on having offset sights as well as an optic. what would be a great 1x4ish or 4 only scope that is less then $500.
I looked at some burris ones but I think I like traditional cross hairs. tell me what you think?

I'd recommend the Trijicon TR24, but even used, it sells for around $600-700.  But at $500, I've heard great things about the Vortex Viper PST 1-4

Only 1-4x? Burris CTAC and MTAC is pretty nice.  Bushnell Throwdown could be another option.   Vortex is coming out with the 1-6x Strike eagle in a few months.  Looks pretty sweet, especially for the price.

Where can I find a tr24 for 600-700?

cheapest I've found is 799 for a TR24G

edit: never mind, just noticed you said "used"

See if SWFA's new SFP 1-4x is available yet.  That would be my first choice.

What has been mentioned already aren't bad options, but you mention that you'd really love an ACOG and want a crosshair reticle.

If you really want an ACOG, you can sometimes find used TA01NSN's or TA01's in the $600-$650 range on the EE.  Maybe save an extra hundred or so and keep an eye out?

If not, a 1-4x Vortex Viper PST is a great option.  I'll also mention the Burris MTAC 1-4x.  I had one for a while, and while it's a little heavy, it had decent enough glass and the reticle was easy to use.

I also had and sold the vortex viper. Had some heft but it was a nice scope. I'm current looking at the leupold 1.5-4 mod ar firedot

what about a great little scope for fairly cheap that has a standard duplex reticle ?

weaver makes a really nice V-3 1-3 x 20 that only costs $174.00 and ships free so you could save the rest for the ACOG in the future.

The reticle takes getting used to but the Mtac is nice for the price.

Intended use?  IMO, there are no truly great 1-4x in your price range.

PST -  If you have great vision definately get this one, close to true 1x.
VXR-   Great features, not true 1x but close enough.
AR MOD - Light weight, ok glass, skip it if you want a true 1x.
TR24 -  Out of budget but deserves consideration.  Skip it if illumination is not a top priority.

I'm pretty high on the Burris MTAC 1-4 after spending much more on optics in the past. The MTAC has stood up to abuse, has nice glass, and the reticle works out very well. Best $399 I've spent in a while... BTW, you won't need offset irons with a 1x4 scope. You can run the thing almost as fast as a reflex sight at 1x.

I was looking at just a 4 power by itself. I been wanting to try my hand at 3 gun. I do have plenty of Eotechs laying around so I might just use those. I mostly just want something different then a normal scope and redot so something in the middle?

I just ditched my ACOG for a Razor HD. It hurt the wallet, but I won't be looking back. Your not missing out too much with the ACOG.

Don't forget approx 200+ dollars for a quality 1 piece mount. Larue, bobro, adm

A good value mount is aero precision. $100

watch the EE for the SWFA HD SS 1-4. I got one close to your budget and it is one hell of a scope.

What do you think about a Millett DMS-1 ?
Link Posted: 3/2/2015 1:53:18 AM EDT
[#23]
Of all the nice scopes talked about here, I rarely see them ever break they are all pretty durable. The millet I have seen break.. It was replaced but don't buy that price of garbage. I would rather have a pa 1-4.

Maybe get one of the Bushnell 1-4 throwdown scopes from PSA for $100 until you can afford better or decide if you like them. I love 1-4 and realize it's more my thing then a red dot but they are heavy and change the chararistics of your rifle. You might hate it. Plus after a mount, throw lever, offset sites, you are in it deep so you better like it because your wallet won't. And yes, you will want those extra's they are the shiznit.

Bushnell AR optics 1-4, great little scope. I think PSA still has em on sale for about $170 with PEPR mount. Very cheap setup but I love mine, holds zero and with the money u save u can buy a bunch of ammo.

This.  Best glass you are likely to find at $600.  Mil/mil and motion activated Firedot.  30mm main tube.  Plenty rugged.
