I only know that most people lean toward the 3 over the 2 due to the 3's manual brightness settings(it has 3 manual settings as apposed to the 2's automatic brightness settings). Consensus is that the 2 was just too brite for most peoples liking. Tough little unit from what ive read!

I have a FF2 Burris's new AR mount and I have to admit that its one of my favorite optics with a sight picture that I prefer over my beloved Aimpoint. I have considered upgrading to the FF3 but haven't yet since it hasn't given me any problems.

I have a FF III on a Keltec PMR-30. The auto-light setting does make the dot a bit too bright, maybe alot too bright. Not the best for distance or precision in auto-light mode. Noticed the dot does dim and brighten considerably depending on ambient light. Otherwise just press the switch and lower the setting to your liking. Literature says its all metal (not the glass duh) with auto shut off. I placed it on my Colt flat top with flip up BUIS. The FF sits WAY too low for a site picture, even with the BUIS folded down. I think it sits too low for a decent manipulation of the rifle for any shooting. I had the same idea as the OP and found the ADM brand Docter QD with a riser for use on AR's. Too bad the riser version for a FF is not available. ADM makes their QD for the FF on a rail though.

I haven't been able to confirm if mounting options are the same for the III's. I know the first two generations are the same

No
"FastFire III is not compatible wih the AR-F3 FastFire Mount (410348) or the Picatinny Protector Mount (410330)" The Burris site tells me so |

I would take a piece of masking tape and put over the front "eye". Then take a black magic marker and color it in. It makes the dot dimmer and more useable in bright light. And during hours of darkness you can remove the tape and brighten the dot up.
I really like the automatically adjusting dot intensity. Dolomite |

The other difference big between the II and III ... on the III you can replace the battery without removing the sight, not so on the earlier versions. |
